I knew "of" Saban when he was at LSU but I don't live in SEC country so I didn't really know how genius he truly is. Not only has he esablished himself as one of the top coaches in the NFL in one year but perhaps the top GM. I can only think of a few teams that have upgraded their roster remotely close to what Saban has done this offseason. Jimmy Johnson with Cowboys, but he had Dallas' top picks plus the Vikings entire draft due to the Hershel Walker trade. The Steelers via the draft in the early 70's and perhaps the Niners of the 80's (although I hate to admit that one).
Adding Culpepper is the most obvious move, but his true genius has been to add "depth" to the Dolphins. He has shown he is an absolute "MASTER" of the 53 man roster or should I say 80 man roster. The players he has added are all young, consisting of four or five years in the league, and have "starting" experience: Goodman, Hill, Cooper, Hodge, Pearson, Shelton, Anderson, Campbell, Harrington, Peele. Am I missing others? Of course, Brees wishes he were a Dolphin. These are all guys that should be entering the prime of their careers. This should not be overlooked.
All the while he has kept the entire core of the team together. The only players to note that have left during the offseason were the secondary, Madison and Schulters in particular and that appears to be by his design. Of course, Rickey was beyond his control.
The other geniusness that may get overlooked is the versatility of the players this team is accumulating: Hill and Jason Allen can play CB or S. JT can play DE or LB now. Zgonina DT or DE. Campbell and Welker WR and Returner. Hadnot and McKinney G or C. Marcus Vick (assuming he makes the cut) QB - WR - Returner ??? Can you guys think of other versatile players we now have on the team? The benefit of having 7-10 guys who can play multiple positions is a 53 man roster more resembles a 60 man roster.
The only thing I haven't seen from Saban that comes to mind is it appears with the depth he has assembled this offseason he will have to cut some guys that are quality players (a problem Miami hasn't had for a while). Will he be able to trade some of those players for 6th or 7th round draft picks rather than straight out release them.
Honestly, did any of you guys know he was this good when we hired him last year?
