i don't know if this is where i should start this thread but...

i tried to install an indoor hdtv antenna so i could see the local broadcast of the superbowl in hd. (directv doesn't show your local channels in hd). i couldn't receive any terrestrial hd signals via my new antenna. maybe some of you encountered the problem with sunday ticket. the sunday ticket game was hd, but you couldn't receive in hd, because it was broadcast locally and you didn't have a terrestrial hd antenna.

anyway, i was talking to directv yesterday and in april 2006 they are coming out with a 5 lnb antenna upgrade and hd tivo receiver (they quoted $99, but i'm hoping to talk them down, good customer). this will allow you to receive your local stations in hd via the dish (instead of the terrestrial hd antenna).

i did get a waiver (so far only cbs and nbc) so i can receive the hd channels on 80 and 82. hopefully fox and abc will come through before the superbowl. of course, they're ny stations, but if the abc waiver comes through, i will see the superbowl in hd. otherwise i will upgrade in april and the point will be moot after that.

i just wanted to let all the directv people out there know about this.

- i am in the exact same situation as you...
- i thought that the supperbowl was going to be on cbs am i wrong?the website seems to make me thing cbs
-what is the 5 lnb anenna??? is that the new satilite that they have been promissing? or just some kind of upgraded local station thingy like the dumb anenta that clips onto your dish now?

:edit.. i see now that the game is on abc... crap!

A few notes for you: Yes I knew about the national feeds on NBC and CBS. But it was smart of you to bring it up.

They've been promising Fox and ABC forever and the FCC has a stick up there but and won't let us.

By 2007 MPG4 sats will be up and running with over 5000 local channels and the ability to have over 150 HD channels(premium) making all of this useless unless you are in a situation like myself.

As far as your antenna choice, it would work if you were less then 10 miles from the actual feed in line of sight. go to www.antennaweb.org. Type in your info and you will get everything you need as far as the power and type of antenna. Make sure to select the digital channels only as those are the HD ones. STAY AWAY from TERK antennas they are garbage that is packaged up to look nice.... ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE PIECES OF GARBAGE.

Due to the changes that are up in the air for HD I highly recommend a UHF/VHF combo.(most channels will go VHF, but some refuse) I have the 55 inch boom length with 30 bars on it, It got damaged in the last hurricane so I am thinking of upgrading to the 90 inch long one. I will now install them in my attic. Where my slightly damaged but fixed by me one resides. The antenna I am looking at getting has a range of 45-60 miles and my stations are all 21-22 miles away in a 3 degree radius (175-177) so through my roof and other items I should be good with something that strong. Now for me this is a no brainier as if the hurricane takes out DTV I still get local channels, thereby definitely being worth the investment. I have a generator for power for those laughing at the idea of what good is an antenna with no TV or power. If it takes off my roof well then I have larger problems.

The antenna on top of your dish for like $50 from DTV SUCKS it has no power, a bad signal to noise ratio and is a dipole type antenna bent around the frame of your dish, it is no different then Rabbit ears perfectly horizontal. Go with the right antenna for you based of of the website I mentioned earlier, if you get it up right even rain and hurricanes can't block those radio waves.

allegedly (provided you have the hdtv package) you will receive your local stations in hd without the external antenna. (for the shows they broadcast in hd), once you get the new receiver and antenna (for a nominal fee, of course). the changes will not affect the rest of your receivers at all. you just need the new antenna and receiver (or tivo) to receive hd local channels through directv.

a wing,

yes, i've been to antenna web and have seen the information.

that was part of my "plan" get a poor antenna, connect it and complain to directv and see if i couldn't get a waiver for the network channels on (80 to 88) in hd.

like i said, cbs and nbc were immediate, but fox and abc may take some time.

with that said, i am not going to invest in an external antenna, i will wait a couple of months and upgrade my systems for $99, and have the local hd signals come through my dish.

i'm not worried about a hurricane, you can take the dish down for the hurricane, and put it up afterwards (if you still have power). it doesn't take too long, and you don't have to be a rocket scientist to aim it.

eric,

that's great, i think you're correct and it is on cbs, which means i will get to see the superbowl in hd. as i said, cbs and nbc waivered me instantly, and i was receiving them before i got off the phone with directv.

edit:

i just checked again with another web site and the game is being broadcast by abc. so i hope my waiver comes through before the 5th.

sorry for any bad info about cbs the game is on abc like i originally thought.

and Super Bowl XL will be shown on ABC, which will be the final NFL game broadcast on on that network for the forseeable future. quote from web site.

Go to checkhd.com and enter your address and they will tell you exactly where the hd signals are and what you need to receive them.

I just upgraded to the new 5 lnb dish and the corresponding receiver for my HD tv. The local channels have now been in HD (when the programming is in HD) for the past two weeks. All the playoff games look sweeeeeet!

The dish is considerably bigger...probably 50% bigger than the old dish. BTW...I'm in the Washington DC market (MD suberbs) so maybe we are in the first wave of big markets that have this access.:)

I live in nowhere Iowa, and don't get the local feeds in HD on my dish. I do get them off the dish, just not in HD. So are you saying I can call in and get the HD national feed through the dish?

Should of got Cable you get all local channels HD.

I have Cable and DirctTV. So I dont get your problem.

I have Dish Network but my mom has Directv and I called both places and they said that by the springtime we would be able to get our local channels in HD. So hopefully you won't need an off air antenna much longer.

Good for you getting the waiver. All four of the Albany, NY stations denied mine, even though Im more than 40 miles from their transmitters and I can sometimes get CBS and ABC but nothing else. I actually got a good signal for the AFC Champ game, but I had to go w/ the Stan Def for NFC.

At least you know you're being upgraded in April. All they tell me is "sometime in 2006." But that comes w/ the territory. Miami will always be ahead of Albany on the list. Usually, we're somewhere in the middle. I just want to get it by football season so I can see the games against the local teams in HD - all others I get through Sunday Ticket.

Couple things from my own experience...

I live less than 15 miles from all my local stations, and can get them all over the air with an indoor "HORRIBLE PIECES OF GARBAGE" Terk antenna ;) I believe the model is TV-5. It picks up the only VHF station in the area and all the UHF stations. This is Indianapolis, though, so I don't know how the differences in transmission power would affect things.

Also, the 5 LNB dish works with the new MPEG4 units that will allow us to get local channels off the satellite, but don't expect them in April. DirecTV is already sending out MPEG4 HD receivers, but the first HD DVRs to use MPEG4 aren't going to be out until July at the earliest. This was announced at CES, and DirecTV CSRs have a rep for not knowing anything, so that's probably why they told you April. I would expect the HD DVR in July at the EARLIEST, and it could even be pushed back.

And you may not have to pay the $99 when the time comes. DirecTV says they will swap out your old receiver for the new one for free when your locals become available, and will charge $99 if the hardware becomes available before your locals do and you want the equipment before you need it. Whether that's actually true is anyone's guess.

The bottom line IMO is to be weary about spending a lot on an OTA setup when Miami isn't too far down the list for MPEG4 conversion. I'd hate to see you spend that money just for the Super Bowl, and then have DirecTV swoop down in June and give you locals for free. Just my $0.02.

I hope someone can answer this for me, Im with directv but i have been denied to get waivers from all my local channels 3 times. I can not get any local channels and have bought indoor antennas and the amplified ones as well and still cant get my local channels. I have also tried the ones that you clip on your dish. In short of getting a roof antenna what are my other options is there a way I could get them to approve my waivers? I live in a radius of about 20-30 miles from the local feeds. thanks in advance for any infos, havent even seen any of the playoff games its frustrating:(

I just spoke with DirecTV the other day about this.

Only local channels specific markets are carried over DirecTV in HD through the dish without need of an extra antenna. S. Florida is not one of those markets. You do in fact need an extra antenna right now.

As for the deal of $99 for the HD receiver with Tivo.
If you really got that deal I'd take it but I think you mistook what the rep told you. The regular HD receiver without Tivo is $99 or free with a rebate. The HD/Tivo receiver is $500.

I bought a simple Indoor antenna from Brands Mart for $45 and I get ABC, NBC, Fox and CBS in HDTV. Saw all the playoffs games and all the prime time shows I like come in crystal clear with this antenna.

** note that you have to make adjustments to the "ears" of the antenna to pick up channels from diff. networks. You get a black screen saying no signal, then play with it for a couple of minutes and you'll get the signal you want. I have pretty much figured out the position needed for every station. ** At least it works for me anyway.

It's RCA ANT 1250 ~ Amplified Indoor Antenna VHF/UHF/FM Stereo/ Terrestrial HDTV model.
