Disturbing Salary Cap Number

Two things you must consider. As Atila posted, Wallace, Hartline, and Gibson are playing for VERY little this year. Next year, their cap hits will increase by around $20M, which is the same as what we now have available. It was a good move by Ireland to give him options if the right deal came up but, this year's savings will be paid next year, and we will still be in VG shape.

The other thing, as of now, is GREAT!!! We have Tannehill, Miller, DT, Sims, Clay, Pouncey, Martin, and Jerry all on rookie contracts. That's SIX starters and two others in the rotation. We shall see how all these guys work out but, it is very encouraging to see "All The Young Dudes" drafted by us on the field.

As others have said we will roll a very large % of the $20 million or so to next year. We have about 6-7 vets to either re-sign or replace with free agents, and with about $105 million in salary already allocated for 2014. If we didn't rollover a very large amount of space from this year we would only have about $23 million to fill those 6-7 holes and that wouldn't be enough.

Yeah, and that money committed includes all the escalating contracts for Wallace, Ellerbe, etc, etc. So, we will have over $40-50M to cover Grimes, a second S (maybe Clemons), pay Misi, sign Soliai or Starks, sot out the OL based on this year (Clabo, Cog, and Jerry are FA), and maybe a TE.

Grimes could get the Franchise tag and think the O-Line will probably be addressed in the draft. Two things could determine how many o-linemen are drafted. 1) IF Miami re-signs any of Clabo, Jerry or Incognito. 2) The development of Yeatman, Samuda, Brenner and Dallas Thomas. There is as strong possibility 1 of either Starks or Soliai will be gone. Misi and Clemons are the 2 remaining F/A who may get re-signed depending on their play in 2013 and how others develop behind them. I'm expecting some of the vets like Patterson for example being cut after the season to save additional cap dollars.

If Grimes plays as well as we are all hearing about, he is a MUST keep. I'm hoping that Dallas can replace Cog, that Jerry and/or Samuda can man the RG, and that Martin is good enough at LT or, at least RT to leave us only one position to fill. I do not see Clabo coming back.

On D, we will very likely need a DT, and that should come from FA, as rookies seldom work in their first year. Patterson should be gone with Taylor taking his place.

This year's free agent haul only cost us $17 million against the salary cap this season. Next year, that jumps to $50 million. We need to roll as much of this year's remaining cap space forward as we can in order to absorb that and to keep our key free agents.

All of that is included when you see us having $40-50M cap space next year.

Fasano would have been a very expensive back up and also would diminish the development of sims. nobody expected that nasty injury to keller . it´s the nfl .

Is it merely coincidence that we ranked 31st in money spent on offense and we're ranked 27th in total offense? And check out that trend from 2008 to today, helluva GM'ing job I tell ya.

I don't know if Philbin or Tannehill are any good but how can anybody say they are bad when we're pinching pennies like we did on offense? And whats worse is we lost 5 of the guys we did spend money on. We basically rolled into the season with an expansion level type offense so if you want a scapegoat, here it is.

Teams that do not have a major cap # in their QB typically have a ton of cap room.

Well it was an expansion level offensive line I can tell you that much.

It actually could be. Is there a league-wide correlation in that regard?

I think you're looking at a better correlation with QB play there than with salary cap expenditures.

This biggest misconception about the cap is that more dollars spent equals more talent. Don't spend the money unless there are players worthy of that money. The 2013 free agent market was very weak.

Whats ****ed up is Tannehill is 10th in yards while the team is 27th, he's put up passing numbers we haven't seen on this team in decades with relatively **** talent supporting him. None of it adds up.
