Glory Glory to Ole Georgia
One name that never gets any mention when discussing the QB of the future is DJ Shockley, QB for Georgia Bulldogs. I really think a player like Shockley can be successful in Linehan's spread offense because of his mobility. Linehan's system seems to open up a great deal of space underneath for the QB to tuck and run for a gain if there is nothing open downfield. Culpepper was the perfect QB for Linehan because he provided a true dual threat. With Linehan, Culpepper rushed for 609, 422, and 406 yds respectively. Even Gus when he did run this year was able to bust a 13 yd run, and he's not swift by any means. IMO, the spread offense is even deadlier when there is the threat of a running Qb (possibly Saban's thinking in getting Cleo Lemon). Now for those that doubt Shockely's passing check this stats: 14th in the nation in QB rating with a 153.96, 14tds to only 4 ints, and only ranks behind Leinhart, Young, and he's in the top 10 in yds/attempt. His completion % is 57.5, but some of that can be attributed to the many drops that his receivers have every game.
This guy is a winner. In his only year as starter, he had people on the national stage talking about a possible undefeated run. He went down in the Arkansas game, and the Bulldogs sadly missed him against the Gators. He makes all the throws, and doesn't seem to get rattled. There you have it.
