Not a statement here just wondering what the faithful think and who may be the BPA if they follow college ball.

Probally a Mix of the two

If the BPA is a middle linebacker I doubt we take him

but

If the BPA falls into one of our needs then yeah we go after him

Basically its

BPABN

Best Player Available By Need

who is the BPA out of the positions we need is the the question I think

You always pick BPA. If BPA is such a non-need that the pick would be ridiculous, you trade away from the position.

My best guess is that BPA will be a LT, a LB, or a S.

"take a chance" at drafting a player of need?
That means not drafting the BPA but looking to the first round as a place to absolutely assure that we get as high a rated player in a "need" position as we possibly can even if it means drafting a player rated lower on our draft chart. Or like Jimmy said giving up other picks to move into the position to get the "need" player.

IF the best player available is better than what you currently have on your roster - then you take him - regardless of need !!

Every team has a different view as to who the BPAs are and the way the rank them, and yes, need can influence that - but it should be the rare occassion when it dictates the pick.

Drafting for need only brings trouble ... that's what free agency is for.

IF the 2 match, then great ... or all things being equal, then go with need.

But you can NEVER have enough playmakers [generally speaking] ...

About the ONLY thing you could say with any assurance is that we wouldn't draft a RB.

If we finish 9-7 or 8-8 then I think we will be picking in that 13-20 range of the first round. Unless someon at a need position that Saban has rated higher falls to us then I think you go BPA.

Yes I agree, combination of BPA and need...

BPA positions we look past:
MLB
RB
OG
WR ...maybe
DE

BPA we grab immediately:
QB
LT
CB/DB
OLB

Just what I think would make most sense.

I disagree with not taking best BPA and they are a MLB or OG. Our Guards are nothing great and Zach is getting older. 3-4 Defenses use two mlbs, why not ahve to young ones in Crowder and whomever. The only position that is safe on our team not to draft is RB. Even TE wouldn't be bad. We run as many Two tightend sets as anyone. You always take the most talented player you can get in each round.

Exactly what I was going to post.

You always take the best player on the board with your top pick...you go for need in the later rounds if you want but in the first round you don't take the 28th best player with the 15 pick.If Nick was to go for need I only see him taking a QB like Cutler.....that wouldn't not surprise me but other than that I see us taking the best player. At 15, it seems the best players will be at OLB,DB and LT.

Ozzy rules!!

I think Saban will have lots of info on Cutler, he has coached directly against him and knows what his weaknesses are and if he has the talent to be taken in the first. If we take him or don't take him I'm comfortable in the decision that Saban makes in this case.

Perfect synopsis of perfect draft stategy. Emotional and "need" picks are what mess you up; Nick has the discipline to stay with this technique. Maybe you go fishing for need with a 6th or 7th, but first day you've just got to be disciplined in your approach.
