There seems to be two philosophies on what direction the Dolphins should go this offseason. One is to sign a FA QB and take a rookie late and not really worry too much about the QB position and just focus on building everywhere else. The other is to do whatever it takes to get a "franchise" QB in the draft whether that means giving up picks or maybe even Ricky Williams. There are arguments like "teams win Super Bowls with guys like Brad Johnson and Trent Dilfer." This may be true, but I feel Nick Saban is trying to build a dynasty here. Trying to build a team that will year in and year out contend for a Super Bowl. And while in history teams have won Super Bowls with average QBs, every dynasty has had a great QB. The Dolphins had Bob Griese, the Steelers had Bradshaw, the niners had Montana, the Cowboys had Aikman, and the Pats have Brady. If the Dolphins want to put themselves in that class they need to not just accept a mediocre QB and trying to win despite him, but rather with him leading the charge. In order to get that QB, they can't just sit back and hope they get one later on in the draft, but need to trade up and make sure they lock a stud QB up. Yes, that may cost a second this year, or a 1st next year, but to me giving up a solid player that we could get with those picks is well worth landing a very good player at the most important position on the field. It also may cost Ricky Williams and while I would rather keep him and have a two headed monster in the backfield, we still have a great young RB in Brown and in 3 years when Ricky is 31 and probably not on the team anymore would you rather have lost him for nothing or for a QB who is on the brink of stardom? Like I said I would rather give up picks, but if it takes giving up Ricky to get our QB of the future, then it is worth it. We are in a position at 16 where we won't be probably for a while and it will probably cost less this year to move up than when we are picking down in the 20's. So it is in my opinion that we do whatever it takes to capitalize on the opportunity to get a QB to lead the Dolphins Dynasty into the next decade.

What if Saban doesn't feel the top QB's in the draft are "dynasty" worthy? What if he thinks the QB that will be available in the later rounds, is? You have to wonder what was going through Belichick's head when he drafted Brady in the 6th round. Montana himself was a 3rd rounder. Dynasty QB's aren't always the ones in the first round. We may not have to move up at all to get our QB.

Wow, there are some good posts tonight, check out the new Vince Young thread over in the Draft forum too fellas! I didnt know what to expect when I saw the title but excellent post. I completely agree with you...however, if we HAVE to give up Ricky then it best be to trade up to take Leinart...if we can trade up with picks instead of giving up Ricky then I would want Young!!! I really think we should target Young and try and hold on to Ricky...but I wouldnt complain with Leinart or Cutler either!

IF Saban finds the right person to be the Dolphins QB then we should do whatever it takes to get them. I will put my trust in Nick to make the right decisions 98% of the time.

I keep thinking about Marino and the fact he came to us as the 27th pick in the 1st round and the rest is history. Its true however, our pick will probably, hopefully fall later and later as Saban turns the Dolphins into a better team. Its a shame that the Dolphins haven't been able to aquire a franchise QB and had to just accept what was
available at the time. We can all hope that will change with Saban and Muellers running of the team.

Oh my i was going to post something like this.Best post i have read on this subject so far good job.

I think Leinhart is the type of quarterback your talking about. I think he would fit our mold perfectly. He has tremendous accuracy and really picks apart defenses. I think he would be perfect because of all the skill players we are putting around him. I hope some how we end up with him and sign Josh McCown while Leinhart learns the system

or we could go with Frerrotte this year  and see what's there (including the kid from ND)next year......that is if the players union doesn't csll for a walk out. a real possibility from what Tagliabue told the NY Times, if they don't reach an sgreement . This has me worried.

If he doesn't feel the top QBs in the draft are "dynasty" worthy than my whole argument goes out the window, but I am pretty sure the top 3 all are. And it is hard to feel a later round QB is "dynasty" worthy because they are late round prospects for a reason. Everyone praises Belicheck for taking Brady in the 6th round, but all that means is the Patriots had a 6th round grade on the guy just like everyone else and they happened to have the pick around where he was projected to go. It is possible to find good QB's later on in the draft, but you run a much higher risk that they won't pan out. There are always question marks on those guys. By trading up and taking one of the top guys you are giving yourself a much better chance of landing a great QB.

Next year we will most likely be picking alot lower and won't have a chance at Quinn who has a great chance to go #1 overall.

Every QB in this draft has question marks, including the big 3. Just because you take a top QB in the draft, doesn't mean he's a good QB. What risk are you running by taking a late round QB? If he doesn't pan out, then you lose the late round pick and that's it. Look at the risk you're taking if you trade up to take a QB and he ends up being a bust. There are 2nd and 3rd round QB's in this draft that are dynasty worthy and I would much rather stay where we are in the first round and take one of them later.

Every QB does have their question marks and no one is a guarantee, but the reason why the big 3 are projected to go so high is because they have much less question marks and much higher potential. And by taking a QB in round 2 or three you may not be taking the risk of a losing a first rounder and paying them all that money, but your risk of not coming out of the draft with your QB of the future is much greater. And if they don't pan out how will it feel knowing that you could have used that pick to move up and draft someone who is now a budding star. IMO there are 6 QB's who have a chance to be a "franchise" QB in this draft. Lienart, Young, Cutler, Croyle, Whitehurst, and Jacobs. The first three have a much greater chance though than the next three. In fact those last three might never end up as starters in the NFL. That is why they are later round picks rather than early first round picks.

For those of you who've followed Saban at LSU... what was the caliber of QB he had while in college? Did he win his Nat'l Championship with a "franchise" type signal caller? I know in college the "career" is a measly 2 to 3 years while waiting for your chance, but I'm curious to know the QBs during his success.

The Pats dynasty began with Bledsoe at the helm. I'll take another year with Frerotte in return for starting a dynasty!
