Pretty clear. IMO we are good and we just need to wait until this offense can help our defense and not the other way around.

This what I posted on another thread.

This defense is not Nolan's grind it out. It's designed like the Bengals' defense and it's supposed to make teams playing catch up pay through turn overs and bend but not break.

It's not a defense that will cause many three and outs, it's a defense that will get takeaways and hit the passer.

When our offense starts performing the synergy between the two will work out.

It's also a defense that will tire out, all the stunting our front four does wears them out, outside Sol, we are undersized and prone to get the ball ran up our guts.

It's not that the personnel is wrong, Jeff actually did a great job of assembling this defense in record time, the problem is it lacks the synergy it needs from the offense.

We changed from bump and run corners to zone, we changed reacting line backers to attacking line backers (which is the correct definition of what these guys do right) not blitzing, not coverage but guys that will dictate what the offense does with their cheer athleticism to show up anywhere on the field unexpectedly.

We changed from OLBs to DEs. IMO we just have to keep this defense competitive through this FA period and switch our LBs back to SOLB on the left and WOLB on the right.

That last point is because I think Wheeler is always out of position cause he tries to run around TEs and FBs lead blocking him cause he lacks the PoA leverage to shed blocks.

IMO we play Wheeler and Misi switched first because Wake plays on the left so we want the ability to have an additional blitzer (Misi) on the right and because we think it will throw offenses off but there's so much tape on this defense already that's pointless. We should switch it back to normal to help Wheeler be more effective and make the best use of Misi's physicality.

So in a few words I think adjustments are needed but not churn or replacing the DC, at all.

Ooops, I meant DC, sorry.

Someone voted that only slight adjustments had to be made. WHO voted THAT? Slight adjustments? We went from #3 against the run to close to the bottom of the barrel in two seasons. That is more than "slight adjustment." That is downright awful and MANY things need to change. I'm all for keeping Philbin. But, as I stated in a thread before, I think we need to replace BOTH coordinators.

Had to edit this: YES, personnel has something to do with it. But there WAS a dramatic drop off when Coyle took over and it only worsened this season with the new acquisitions. Coyle has improved our secondary (that is why is was a good secondary coach). A good defensive coordinator? No. Not in my opinion.

Sorry, caught it right after submitting, can't edit polls. You get my point don't you?

I knew what you meant.

I like how our defense looks honestly. I would add a veteran DT to the mix on a cap friendly contract if we end up losing one of Starks or Solia.

I think our LB could be ok. But we need a true MLB. I like Misi for his role and i think Jordan should see some more time @ OLB next season. Would be a huge waste to cut Wheeler who is our biggest weak link, but Ellerbe hasnt been great either.

If we cant add a MLB , i would just move Misi to MLB and Jordan and Ellerbe outside. I think Misi would make a much better Mike then Ellerbe does. And Jordan cant be worse then Wheeler is. Bring Wheeler off the bench.

I think CB and Safety we are set. Jones has had somewhat of a down year in terms of his turnover production, but he is still a good tackler and hasnt given up any big plays on his side of the field. Clemons is also pretty serviceable. I would prefer more of a ball hawk, but Clemons hasnt been bad this year and IMO safety is not a position of "dire need" CB we are ok with. Id still look to add a vet or another late pick for depth. Hopefully Davis and Taylor are ready to contribute next year. I actually think Taylor has looked solid in limited snaps.

I like our defense, just the LB core is what concerns me. We need a true MLB in there. And hopefully Jordan plays and starts at LB next season.

We have 2 players who suck against the run. Ellerbe and Wheeler. We have 5 D linemen who are good against it and 1 LB. Misi/Wake/Solia/Starks/Odrick/Vernon. Also Shelby is pretty good against the run as well.

Problem is Ellerbe and Wheeer. So i dont see that as "many" changes. I see that as 1-2 changes needs to be made. 1. Add a MLB 2. Start Jordan over Wheeler. Also Jones and Clemons are both solid tacklers from the Safety spots. So is Grimes.

I agree if we lose Sunday, but the only way I see either leaving is they resign and I don't think that will happen. I don't think Joe will fire either, because he will be loyal to the bitter end if need be.

Wheeler and Elerbe need to be looked at for changes. Especially wheeler which is surprising to me because having watched just about every open practice as well as the scrimmage, wheeler looked awesome. Flying around making tackles and batting down passes left and right. But man has he laid a ****ing egg during the season. Like to see DJ have a strong look at his spot next season. He's athletic enough IMO to make the switch.

Replacing dansby and Burnett with wheeler and ellerbee were the biggest mistakes of the off season. Would love to know who was the biggest influence behind these moves as making no change would have been far better

With our the NFL is played these days, I`d rather have more sacks and TOs than field the best rushing D...

Both our starting DEs are undersized. They've been pretty inconsistent at setting the edge against the run this year. Early on in the season we let a lot of RBs get the edge on us and turn up field but I think linebacker play has been the most glaring problem. We also made the change of going with Odrick as a starting DT over Starks...you have to wonder how much that has to do with the rushing defense.

That's what I'm afraid of.

...And I have no problem with having done so, Starks got injured early on the season, is getting up there in age and is a free agent. Odrick has done better than Starks rushing the passer this year and I think they have simply been assigned with shooting gaps and stunting much more than just funneling the RB, which is the reason why we are getting killed on the run.

I don't get this. We are top 10 in points allowed, top ten in sacks, top ten in ints. Only team to have a takeaway every game this year. Literally won two games just by defense. All while spending the 4th most amount of time on the field. Our LBs all signed contracts so they won't change next year. Our DEs are all sticking around. We will prob see most of the FAs on the D side back next year too.

We have a really good D, why wouldn't anybody want to blow it up?
