I know its only week 4, But both of these guys are playing very well for rookies. Langford is an animal seems to have little issue against NFL o-lines. And Merling is a special athlete i think can be that hybrid DE/OLB. But my question do you think that either of these two guys can be the defensive rookie of the year. I think they can with no apparent Willis out there its wide open. Now Langford is more advanced in the 3-4 but Merling is an elite talent i think both are about to step their game up to the next level and start making plays all over the field.

I will say this now Langford will get to double digit sacks. Merling will have 5-8 sacks and atleast 1 pick and a bunch of tackles for both. As of right now.

Merling- 9 tackles and 1 sack
Langford- 8 tackles and 2 sacks 1 tackle for loss

What do you guys think?

I think they are the reason we took the hard-*** approach with Jayson Taylor. I didn't like it but I can see why they did it.

One thing is for sure is that there is no rookie out there taking the bull by the horns like Patrick Willis did last year.

At least not thus far.

It is wide open.. Guys like Flowers and Porter have looked really good at their position though, so far. As have the 2 dolphins..... Chris Long has 13 tackles and a sack.. Sedrick Ellis has been very disruptive for New Orleans. He doesn't have the stats yet, as sometimes stats don't tell the whole story.. But if he keeps playing that way, the stats will come naturally.

Lawrence Jackson has been good for Denver, and Groves for the Jags etc.

Still way too early to get any sort of read, but it will be interesting.

All I know right now is we won't have to worry about Vernon Gholston.

Langford already has 2 -3 sacks? obviously he'll be in the voting for sure. if the team wins 6-8 games I think he'll absolutely be a huge part of that.

I could have sworn Langford has one or two passes defensed as well.. Didn't he knock down a Cassel pass last week?

And I think there was another one.

Langford looks like a MAN.....he will lead rookies in sacks...he may have a few tipped passes Greyboy I'm not sure....he wont get tons of tackles being an end in a 3-4 but he def will have tons of hurries pressures sacks and deflections

So you mean there are no Jets fans roaming the thread here putting in their nominations for Vernon Gholston?

Interesting..........

It would be a pretty big upset if one of those two walked away with the award. Both of them primarily play as a 3-4 defensive end, which typically isn't a big stat producing position. As the season goes on and teams have a little more film to watch and gameplan with, I think they will take notice of Langford and Merling a little more than they are now and make it a priority to keep them away from the QB.

I would be thrilled if either of those two get the award, but I just don't think the stats will be there at the end of the season. If either of them can somehow reach double digit sacks I would say they have a great chance of winning, but 3-4 ends are in there to stop the run first, pass rush second, so I would say the chance of that happening is slim and none.

Chris Long is doing about as good two of them so it should be an interesting race between the 3 of them for the best rookie DE/OLB.

Well if teams decide to gameplan to keep them out the backfield, all that means is more Porter and Roth in the backfield

I think Kendall Langford could definitely get it.

Lawrence Jackson is for real, though...and the Seahawks get the pleasure of playing four games against the St. Louis Rams and San Francisco 49ers, both of which are like a broken slot machine when it comes to sacks.

Chris Long has some tackles and whatnot but he's playing on an atrocious defense and that won't do him any favors in terms of DROY.

I'm excited because Langford only has 2.0 sacks and from what I've seen of him, he's only scratching the surface. He could have had like 4.0 sacks by now.
