While looking at our current roster and what we need to do for next year to get better, I think that we need to fill 10 roster spots w/ key players in the offseason via FA or the Draft (barring serious injuries and assuming that our injured players come back healthy). This is how I see it position by position:

QB (1 player needed)-I wouldn't mind having Frerotte as a backup but at a discounted rate. We need to find the QB of the future this offseason

RB (0 players needed)

FB (0 players needed)

OL (2 players needed)-We need to find a stud tackle and a versatile interior lineman that can play C or G. Maybe one of those players is already on our roster (Berger or Brooks) but right now I say that we need 2.

WR (1 player needed)-Even if Booker is still on our team after this season, we need another WR that can stretch the field. I like Welker but he'd be a better fit as the #4 WR IMO.

TE (0 players needed)

DL (1 player needed)-Provided Wright and Vickerson get into the rotation on a consistent basis, we need another DE/DT who can play on that line and can play both positions

LB (2 players needed)-We need 1 LB to take the place of Seau/Spragan on the starting unit and I think we need to have another LB to add more depth to the LB corps.

DB (3 players needed)-This is the unit on our team that needs the most work especially if we cut guys like Madison and Howard. Assuming Poole and Mitchell can contribute, we need to sign more players that can play both the CB and S positions.

I'm not saying that we only need to sign 10 players this offseason. I'm just saying we have to find 10 players to fill these positions. Give me your opinions.

if that were all, it'd be easy to do. but, several players won't be here next year that would mean we'd need more depth at those positions

Good assessment. I think the major problem is not necassarily GETTING the 10 players you're discussing. It's going to be getting 10 players that are all upgrades over who we have now. Obviously we are not going to be able to afford all 10 players in free-agency regardless of how much money we will have. You also have to assume, for arguments sake, that the guys we draft past round 2 will be more like back-ups who are being groomed to take over later (later being the following season). So will we be able to bring in 10 or more players and they all be upgrades over who we have? WOW, would that be great. But it's not very realistic. I think the front office will target free agents much like a draft board with our most pressing position of need being written first with each player of that position available. Then they will weigh if a particular player who is available would be a better/ more valuable signing than another guy in another need position. (I hope that makes sense). I think getting seven players who are a TRUE upgrade would be a nice and successful off-season. Then we'll sign some guys who will improve depth and we'll have the young guys learning and getting prepared to step up for us later in the season and/ or the following seasons.

I agree with you. I think Saban knows what's out there in the college ranks and he will make his offseason plan w/ this in mind to maximize our roster for next year. I do believe it will be possible to find these 10 players but then again I'm a big-time optimist that believes we're going to the SB every year.

I believe it is POSSIBLE to get the 10 players. But there are alot of variables: cap space, being outbid by another team, players simply not interested, re-signing some of the players that are already on one year contracts that will expire, etc.
But I'm with you: I am optimistic that Miami is always in it. We will be next year.

You're right. I made this list w/ certain players not here (Madison, Howard, T. Jones) but I'm not a psychic. This offseason will be fun though.

Get rid of your sig...I can't believe you'd actually be for that.

good thread. If we pick up Bentley then thats one down and saban has reported to say wanting to improve 3 players on our line adn one is C n the other 2 are the T's. so either Draft or alabi or FA such as bouche or whatevre from the Lions. Cinncy does have 2 very good lineman going into FA possibly but they want to sign em' badly. WR, not sure who or what to do abotu that as i rather fix other holes right now. QB, cutler, FS Blue, CB - FA. SS keep lance if we dont pick up archuleta or T. williams (was everywhere vs us last week) pick up peteron as lavar seems to have soem issues as well such as RW type of thing where he wont mind retiring. DT s adams will be free and i eblieve many OTHER very GOOD DE are going to be in the FA this year. there are many ways to fill holes but id love to fill em first via FA so we can hit Draft with other holes to fill. btw. AJ nicholson is expected to have KILLLED his stock/rd projection as he got charged iwth sexual assuault n ibelieve will miss the bowl game and that means we can have a steal in day 2 in a ILB i believe he is that is a projected 2 rder. only prob, his off the field issues are major ones. not partying or smoking some weed rather things along the lines of assault chargers etc. so i dono.

I didn't hear these Fire Coker comments when he won the National Championship....

IMO, change the following to make 15 must fill positions:

RB-1 (Minor FA)
FB-1 (Morris FA)
WR-2 (Gilmore FA & upgrade for WR Cliff Russell)
OL- 3 (2 tackles for FA McDougle & McIntosh cap casualty and the C/G)
DB-4 (2 safties for FA Schulters & Tebucky cap casualty, CB for Howard cut, & the CB/S as insurance for injured Poole & Mitchell plus Bell a restricted free agent. Add one more CB to make 5 DB if Madison not back)

I can see why you think it's 15. Again, I'm no psychic but I see us re-signing Morris, Gilmore and Bell from this list. They are all great ST players and I think they see that this team is headed in the right direction and therefore will come back because I don't think there's going to be a better opportunity out there for them. As for the rest of them, I think that they are all easily replaceable. That is another reason why my list is only 10.

p.s. I have a feeling that McIntosh and Schulters will be back next year too.

Yes, I should have elaborated that I was adding those in a worst case scenario because those spots aren't filled yet with anyone under contract. Hopefully those special team guys can be resigned.
And added McIntosh & Tebucky because IMO no way they stay at their 2006 salaries.
