I am asking becaue most mocks I have seen have us takin him in the 1st round. I know its early and maybe we have a late pick if we keep winnin. But if we get a top 10 pick I dont think we can possibly pass on Mike Crabtree. This guy is a better version of Randy Moss. he is a beast. Selvie is small and will not be able to rush the passer like he does in NCAA. I think we go Crabtree, Vonte Davis (shutdown CB with speed to catch up if beat) if we dont push hard for Asomugha witch I think we should and will,Rey Malauga, If i cant get one of these players Im trading down if at all possible. BP could trade with Philly and get Lito and the Eagles 1st round pick for our top 10 and a7th rounder. I really like Malcolm Jenkins but I think he will be converted to Safety in the NFL and I would never waste a 1st round pick on a Safety. This should prob be in the draft forum but no one ever checks there.

I should have stopped reading when you stated Crabtree is a better version of Randy Moss....but I couldn't.

If we take Selvie....it won't be to play DE....it will be to play OLB on the weak side in the 3-4 and rush the passer....ala Willie McGinnest, Kevin Greene, Pat Swilling, Jason Taylor, Kamerion Wimbley, Greg Lloyd, Terrell Suggs, etc....

Furthermore, Selvie is the same size Jevon Kearse was when he entered the NFL....although Kearse played DE in a 4-3...but all he did was rack up 10 sacks his rookie year on his way to DROY honors...

If you were to look up "pass rush specialist for a 3-4 defense" in the dictionary....you'd see a picture of someone built like George Selvie...

No idea why mock drafts have us picking him. We're set at DE, Langford and Merling will be monsters on that line for years. I'm hoping for Vontae Davis or another top CB prospect more than anybody.

true true true ... Explosive, technical, long frame, that's what you usually want. I wouldn't mind him as our 1st pick, he's the kind of player that is nfl ready IMO. So far though, Roth is telling people "this is my spot" and he's not ready to give it away, if he continues to play this well i think we might adress the secondary before the linebackers in the 09 draft

That is quite possible...and a best case scenario IMO.

I was only trying to convey the logic behind the pick of Selvie, if in fact, we did draft him.

He would be Parcells Demarcus Ware pick....there is a pattern with Parcells....and a freakishly athletic, pass rushing specialist in the 1st round certainly wouldn't be out of character for this braintrust....but they did address the secodary in Dallas with the selection of Terrence Newman in the 1st round of the 2003 draft before addressing the linebackers.

So your point is well taken.

yeah, IMO it's just a question of where the positions will be picked... even if roth has a good season, you need to add depth there as roth's contract is expiring and Joey porter is getting older... and if roth doesn't pan out, you obviously have to draft someone who can step right into the starting role (selvie i.e.) and they usually are found in the first round ... but roth looks good and the defensive backfield is not pretty at all so my mind right now is set on the best DB available in the first and a pass rush specialist in the second .... then again... you have to go by value and if you find a better combination "talent-wise" in drafting OLB-DB instead of DB-OLB, they will go for the first option...

Exactly, If we could somehow luck out and get Davis with our 1st we could trade up and get Brian Orakpo the best pure pass rusher in next year's draft.

Yes, unfortunately i doubt he will be there, and knowing Parcells, most likely he will go MLB in the 1st round. The good thing is, there are some very talented prospects at CB who should be available in the 2nd round.

Jason Taylor was 6'6" 230 lbs when he entered the league and I think he worked out okay. lol. Selvie is 6'4" 245 (if memory) & IMO is an ideal 3-4 pass rushing OLB.

Forget Vontae Davis. Alphonso Smith (Wake Forest) has speed, hits like a safety, & is a turnover creator.

Texas Tech WR's are even more worthless at the next level than their QB's; Wes 'the turncoat' Welker was the exception to the rule.

Thats what I thought as well, but I was told by CK that Selvie is a 4-3 DE. Said he has watched him live for 2 years and questioned why so many people see him as a pass rushing 3-4 olb.

Oh...you mean the expert CK....

It would have to be because of concerns about Selvie playing in a 2 point stance and playing in space....as far as his build is concerned...it's prototype for a 3-4 outside linebacker...

Selvie is quite aggressive and can get himself out of position...overrunning plays....his recognition skills aren't elite IMO...

He is a junior so even though physically he may be ready for the NFL and would be drafted fairly high...I'm not convinced at all that he's better than Michael Johnson, Brian Orakpo, Greg Hardy, or Auston English....another junior who blows me away every time I watch him...

ya, I was more saying I could see a 3-4 team draft him, as he has the build and explosiveness to at least get a look at olb. whether he does, or how high he goes I have no idea. Lamar Woodley is turning into a good one in Pitt. I hope Miami loads up on edge rushers the way Pitt does, so even when you rotate guys in, you constantly have good edge rushers coming at the offense. they took Timmons and Woodley when they were already solid there. hopefull as we get better, we can do the same.
