Does anyone have an idea who will be returning kicks and punts?

It's already been stated its an open competition

Yes and I was hoping the kid from New Mexico State, Chris Williams would make some noise during this weekend's rookie camp..but the fact that Vontae and Smith was able to handle all WR's doesn't say much for a 4.3 speedster who suppose to excel at the return position.. so he probably won't make the team..

The team has many options for returner this year. Bess, Cobbs and Ginns are the obvious returning veterans, but Hartline has returned kicks and I am sure Chirs Clemmons has some capability to do so as well.

I think you will see a return man by committee this year, like we saw towards last year. Depending on the field position and game conditions depends on who will return. I still pull for Ginn seeing that his speed is a huge plus, but we all know he struggles creating holes on his own and would need better blocking.

I believe it's a open competition every year, could be several guys, maybe White, one of the new recievers, if the new safety Clemons has good hands with his speed maybe him. Could be Cobb again, guess we'll find out soon enough.

I think I read somewhere that Parcells is not happy with any of our current return guys and he has elected to do it himself

My guess is it will be Heartline or Cobbs. Bess sucked at PR last year.

IMO, before any 2009 DC's are made at the position, the perfect situation would be Ginn on KR and Cobbs on PR... Get Bess the **** away from returning punts. He lets the ball hit the ground when defenders arent in sight, way too much and loses 10 yards of FP in the process.

Obviously Ginn should get the crucial punt returns... he's by far the best we have.
But he shouldn't take the majority as he is developing into a playmaker for this offense. My preference is to have HB's return kicks... I only wish is that we had traded Cobbs for a 4th and not Booker...

guessing right now is that it'll be a rookie WR... Hartline ( who could be our special teams ace ) or a UFA..
One thing I seriously doubt is Pat White ever fielding a kick.

Ginn isnt quick enough for Punt returns, you need quickness and elusiveness right from the catch as to avoid the tacklers and Ginn doesnt have that right off the bat. Thats why I think Ginn is better at KR's, because he can already get 10 yards of speed before any tacklers are in the area. If he could get the ball from a crappy punt team and have 10-15 yards to run before he has to avoid the first tackler, then he would be very dangerous.

Why would you have wanted to trade cobbs? He is much better than Booker at both RB and returner

As far as WRs go, I have to think Brennan Marion will go on Injured Reserve or the PUP list, one way or another. He's five months out from ACL surgery and he's fully practicing? Come on, now. That's pushing it. He's got a noticeable limp.

Chris Williams is like another Jayson Foster. Him making the roster will be ALL about his return abilities. Some regard him as the top return specialist in the draft. So, we'll see.

Brian Hartline should get a crack at the return jobs. He's big enough to be a kick returner, and quick enough to be a punt returner.

Getting aside from the return jobs...don't be surprised if Anthony Armstrong makes a very strong case to make the 53 man roster this year. You want to talk about a guy that is fast, he's got 4.3 speed. Last year, he made a very strong case for himself making the team. They found it hard to cut him and I think they felt lucky that he was able to stay on the practice squad all year. If he's head and shoulders better than he was even last year...well, don't be surprised if Ted Ginn gets traded.

I think it is a bit much to say that Williams's performance this past weekend means he probably won't make the team. Let us see when the pads begin. I think he still has a very good shot. Let him learn the playbook some.

Stop it, just stop it.... lol

The only problem there is that padless mini-camps are usually where smaller, faster WRs shine before being exposed with the pads on and with play getting a lot more physical.
