And last season vs NEw England at home, or did you forget that 1?
That game illustrates my point perfectly. The defense held the Pats to one TD drive and FOUR drives of only four or fewer plays in the entire second half. That includes a complete shutdown of the Pats offense when they got the ball with 2 minutes to go on their own 35 after Miami missed the game winning FG. With 1:52 on the clock, NE ran 4 plays for 19 yds before the clock ran out. FOUR PLAYS in a two minute drill.
Here are the drives that NE had in the 2nd half:
3 plays - 2 yds (punt)
14 plays - 76 yds (TD)
3 plays - 9 yds (punt)
3 plays - 5 yds (punt)
4 plays - 19 yds (end of regulation)
During that span the Miami offense managed to miss the game winning FG.
In overtime, Miami drove the length of the field and missed the gaming winning FG AGAIN. NE's first possession was a 'great' 7 play 14 yds drive.
At this point the 'suspect' D had given up one scoring drive and five drives that averaged 9.8 yards in just over one half of football against the eventual world champs.
As we all know, the offense gave up the ball on an INT and one play later the game was over.
BTW, in the first half of the game, the defense was just as good. NE had one 54 yd drive that ended in a FG and FIVE other drives that averaged 14.2 yds. One of those drives started at the Miami 26 following a fumble and led to the other FG in the first half.
This game clearly shows that the D must play perfectly. NE's offense was killed by the Miami D the whole game until one pass in OT, but that is the only thing that is remembered.
Can you imagine stuffing the SB champs on 10 drives in the game and not be considered a great defense?
On 10 drives the Pats averaged 12 yds per drive.
The reputation is NOT deserved.
