That we will be a playoff team witha rookie qb at our helm?Or is everybody willing to take a guy and watch him struggle so we can say we have the FUTURE of our team?

Knowing Saban, the rookie won't start for at least 2 years. Unless he's just a freak and picks it all up quickly and is just phenomenal in practice. That's what I think most people miss when they say kick Gus to the curb and get Young or Cutler. OK, then who starts? HAHA because it won't be our draft pick that's for dam sure.

So I guess there is no way Shula should have played Marino during his rookie season or maybe what you mean is Big Ben shouldn't have played a down before the 2005 season. He was the 3rd QB taken in his draft. How do you know the next one isn't in this class?

If we picked up Philip Rivers would he be seen as a veteran (wishful thinking)?

Ben Roethlisberger has changed the way rookie QBs will be viewed from now on. Not only will they be started right out of college, but they will be expected to play well. If we draft a QB in the first round, he will definitely be starting the first game because we don't have a situation where a QB is likely to fail.

In other words, we're not San Francisco starting Alex Smith without any talent or O-line around him. We've got Chambers, R&R, and at least an average o-line. Like Pittsburgh with Big Ben, we have a team in place around the QB position so that a rookie QB could step in right away and make a very positive contribution.

...and it is a possibility.

Sure it is. Miami has a situation where it might be a relatively easy thing to do it. We've got good offensive weapons, the ability to run 35+ times a game with real playmakers, and what will probabaly be a good quality pass protection. Match that with a defensive style that creates big plays and turnovers, and you've got a situation where a relatively mature prospect can start.

Knowing Saban? What do we, or do you specifically know about Saban that leads you to believe this? Crowder and Daniels started the entire season, and Brown, Roth, Wright, and Holmes all saw varying amounts of playing time.

For the worse....

It was the same back in 83 when Marino started 9 of 16 games following the draft and played in 11 all total if I recall. He then takes the Dolphins to the 84 SB (Jan 85) to become the youngest QB ever to do it, and other organizations and their fans were screaming that a rookie they draft should be able to do the same.

Well lo and behold, it took 21 years before another QB (Big Ben) could actually start and play well enough with talent around them to have other franchises scream that a rookie QB should get in and start and play well.

Come on....21 years.....could it happen before another 21 years, perhaps...but is it realistic? Is it fair to that unknown rookie QB? I just think you cant expect it to happen, and you cant plan on that being your option if you honestly expect playoffs and title runs in that rookie year. He would play in his2nd year, and asking him to take you deep in the playoffs is pushing it. 3rd year, sure, its realistic to expect that 3rd QB (2 1/2yr player) is able to take you all the way. Until then, its not.

nope, I think we could be a superbowl team with the right rookie @ qb.

I totally agree!

I honestly think a guy like Cutler in a system like Saban's could in fact lead us to the playoffs. We have the offensive weapons(could use another talented WR) and defense (if we solidify our secondary). The only thing that I would be worried about is our O-line (which is improving with time)...

I've asked this 100 times how do we get Cutler he'll be gone pretty early

Why not ?? One man does not a team make... Pitts got there last year with a rookie...the point is that we don't have to have the next Roethlisberger to improve and possibly make the playoffs. As to whether that can get us to the big dance is another story. The issue we have is that we need several upgrades, not just QB. We need a CB, a S, a young LB to take Seau's place, DE/DT (pending on how Wright and Vickerson develop) and at least one or two OL (depending on whether we re-sign Big Mac to a cheaper contract), and of course a QB...Then we need some fill in guys (like a #3 WR, backup RB (assuming RW is traded), backup/younger DBs and STers).

There is more to our improvement than just QB, although it needs to start there....
