I grew up in the 80's and this was normally true. A great defense, running game and mediocre passing game could win you a super bowl. With the new passing rules that I have now handicapped defenses it seems to me that it is so hard to stop a passing attack that you must offset that fact with a powerful offense of your own. This team over the past 15yrs has had some good defenses to borderline great but it hasn't translated into great teams because we have always been mediocre to bad in the passing game in that time frame also. The teams that have consistently one over that time frame have been very good to explosive in the passing game. Of course their are exceptions like the 2000 Ravens, Tampa, Seattle but by and large you must have excellence in the passing game.
