Wake's performance yesterday, if it is indicative of what we can expect from him, gives us 3 very good pass-rushing OLBs. There is definitely something to be said for having all three of them and rotating them, or using them all at once on passing downs. Depth is a wonderful thing, and a luxury we haven't enjoyed for a long time. But at a certain point, very good depth can translate into trade value that outweighs said depth.
Let's just look into the future a little ways, with a little bit of speculation.
It's the bye week. The Dolphins have just beaten a good Jets team soundly. Wake had another excellent performance against an elite O-line. Ginn was absent again. Matt Roth is looking to come back.
At 2-3, 2-0 in the division, the Phins might be looking like the season is picking up and they've got a legit chance at playoffs this year. With Roth coming back, presumably healthy enough to handle strongside duties on 1st and 2nd downs, and Wake proving he can get it done in the NFL, do you take a chance and see what kind of trade value Porter has? He could probably pull in a 3rd or 2nd.
More intriguingly, could Porter help us swing a deal for the one area of our offense that is lacking (a playmaking wide receiver?). Porter and a late rounder for Bowe? Porter and a 2nd for Boldin? Of course, the assumption here is that the coaching staff has seen enough of Wake in two games to know he's going to be successful.
Porter's value is going to drop significantly after this season, and it's about as high right now as it could be (maybe a little higher during the offseason since he's a bit gimpy right now). If an excess of talent translates into good value, I wonder if it makes sense to take it. And I do think a big-bodied playmaker is going to help Henne's development and confidence tremendously. It might also open up opportunities for Ginn.
Your thoughts... :thanks:
