Nick Saban signed a 5 year contract in 2004, which means he would be under contract for the next three seasons. We all know that Saban can't be trusted and in all honesty, could be bolting Alabama within the next few seasons. Say Saban decides to return to the NFL before the 2010 season, would Miami be able to block it? Would Miami still own his rights since he signed a 5 year contract that wouldn't have expired until after the 2009 season?

It would be nice for Miami to have that kind of control over him and potentially recieve compensation if he decided to return. From my understanding, a coach can leave one level and go to another without permission from his current team. Saban did that, so wouldn't his NFL rights still belong to us?

No NFL team in thier right mind would want him. And if a team does get him they will suck too for the next three years.

You guys seem to be missing the point of the thread. It is not about IF Saban will come back to the NFL, but about whether we still own his right IF a comeback was in his future.

As for not coming back, do you remember the "I will not be the Alabama coach" quote? You never know what Saban will do. But again, this thread is not a debate about whether he comes back, just about his NFL rights.

EDIT: Check out this interesting tidbit.

Saban has been their head coach for 6 months and NEVER signed his contract.

I hope Miami still has his rights so we can be sure he can never move up to the NFL again. He is a young guy, so who knows what he'll want down the road. But if he decides to try and come back, I hope we have his rights so we can either block him or be compensated by the team who wants him.

Not signing his contract is bizarre. What I would find hilarious is that if we held his rights, if every year he didn't report to us a year was tacked on to the end of the contract, like with any player that doesn't report. Maybe Wayne terminated his contract when he left. Don't know. But it could come into play if he does well at Bama and in 5-6 years gets an offer from a desperate NFL team only to find he still owes the Dolphins a few years off the old contract!

I think Saban ends up at Penn State when Joe Paterno decides he has had enough. I have mentioned that to some of the Alabama fans where I work and they get pissed. All you have to do is look at the track record.

You should see some of the T-shirts they were with his name and face on it, pretty funny.

Hmmm... it depends. Saban will not be as dominant as he was before he left the SEC. It's just a matter of 2 things.
1. at LSU he owned his state, and therefore got all the prospects...that will not be the case at Bama where Auburn has been siphoning talent for years now that they have shown to be a great program...
2. The SEC is harder. Since he's been gone the SEC has gotten Urban meyer, Steve spurrier, Vandy's almost a real football team, and Frweaking kentucky made it to a bowl game...there are few cream puffs left..not to mention the leading candidate for the heismann is in his own division...

I think that if he struggles those poor bama fans will start to feel upset after they signed him to the largest contract in College FB history...He may get run out of town unless he gets a championship within 3 years...in that case then yes we would keep his rights becasue we didn't fire him...

Saban might be the next Patriots coach.....just a hunch.

Yeah, I haven't thought of that. I just don't think he will come back to the NFL, nor do I think anyone will take him after what happened in Miami?, but I am probably wrong.
2-3 years in Alabama with no championships and the necks there will probably run him out of town. Just like Benny mentioned, the SEC is no cakewalk these days. Especially with Auburn being a powerhouse taking most of Alabama's talent.

I say Penn state or another Big Ten or top tier school. He seems to like to see himself on TV and in the paper a lot.

The only reason to hold Saban to any contract, assuming we can, is to get MONEY out of him. Otherwise, judging from his performance here, my fervent hope would be he DOES sign with an AFC east team as their coach. Let the wrecking begin, as soon as possible.

He has to sign it before getting full control. Maybe Moore is pointing the Nike/booster money that normally makes the bulk of a D1 coaches contract.

Sometimes those things are handled in separate contracts.
