it is obvious we need a qb but is it really good to draft one. it will take 2 to 3 years for him to become hopefully a good qb. our offense will improve but what about our defense they are aging. thomas, taylor, madison, carter, traylor, these guys have to win now. i just worry that while we groom a new qb our offense will get better but our defense will fall apart cause it will get old and then we will have to bring in new young guys that for a few years are gonna get killed on defense. don't you think its better for us to get a qb that is already in the pros?

Yea, id like to draft one and sign Jon Kitna to a 1 year deal or just get Philip Rivers in the offseason.

A good organization is constantly bringing good new young guys in, this is what Saban will do. Your paranoia is exactly the type flawed thinking that fueled the Dave Wannstedt years.

See the Chiefs:
Exact same situation, except it is their offense that is aging and their defense that sucks...

While Kitna would give me nightmares, i do agree in you're approach. :D

Just because we draft a QB doesn't mean he's going to start for us right away... whether our starter is Gus Frerotte, Phillip Rivers, Jon Kitna, David Carr or whomever... it's going to be someone who can win games for us now like the reasons mentioned about our defense aging which is something we should definitely be concerned about.

It all starts with a franchise QB. I dont want anymore quick fixes.

I remember Dave saying he didn't draft Brees because he didn't want to tell Zach, Taylor, etc that he 'was rebuilding.' Smart move there.

Once you have a franchise QB, you can build around him for 10-15 years. Look how the Colts finally built a defense for Manning. Building a good defense is MUCH easier than finding a P. Manning.

When you have the chance to get a franchise QB and you dont already have one, you get the guy.

Last year, out of the final four teams in the playoffs. All four teams had QBs that are considered 'franchise' QBs. Ben R, M. Vick, D. McNabb, and T. Brady.
Three of those guys were first round picks.

It is very important to have an elite QB if you want to make it far into the playoffs. And he must be a 'franchise QB' if you want to do it year in and year out.

That's true of a good organization...a great organization, however, knows how to infuse experience and youth at the same time. Getting the proper quality vets with the brightest in youth is what managing is all about.

Put me on the list for Rivers. At the very least, he has less risk associated with his future than a true rookie coming out of the draft. He has 2 years of NFL grooming and no baggage. This makes him a smart business decision, and a faster road to success. Talents like JT and Zach don't come along every day...to waste them would be a shame.

great post. i have been saying this for a while too. if any of these fans want to see a taylor or thomas win a super bowl, its not gonna happen if the qb is drafted this year.

it will probably take 3 years for the Qb to be playing at a high level.

this is why i liked the lemon trade: the guy has already been developed. all he needs to do is learn and compete

we dont need Marino, we need a guy who can complete 3rd down passes , just keep moving the chains "when he has to". Lets just pound the rock like Gruden says
