On the new 4-3 defense:
Polian: “It looked at practice today as though the front is not much different than what you played in the 3-4. It looks like a two gap front with some degree, little difference with the linebackers.”
Ireland: “We always felt even that we were going to find versatile defensive linemen, versatile linebackers. We kind of went back and forth, 1 gap, 2 gap since we’ve hadMike Nolan and Paul Pasqualoni and now Kevin (Coyle). It kind of evolved to Mike Nolan that we were playing a lot of Under, and 58 percent of our snaps in Nickel, so that’s a majority of the time.
“The personnel with Paul (Soliai) and Randy Starks in particular, the 3 and the 1, you can play an Over front with Cam (Wake) down or you can play an Under front with (Koa) Misi on the line of scrimmage. Kevin (Burnett), the weakside, he can cover. Karlos (Dansby) has played Sam, Will and Mike in this defense, he’s very versatile. Koa Misi is hopefully coming on into his own.”
