After 4 games the Dolphins have committed 8 turnovers and had one punt blocked.
The offense was responsible for 6 of the turnovers and the special team gave up the other 2 and the blocked kick.

On defense the the Dolphins have forced 8 turnovers and has also blocked a punt. So at this point of the season the turnover differential is a wash.

But when you look at points off turnovers there is a big difference.

Miami has converted the 9 opportunities into 5 TD's and 1 FG and the turnovers have resulted in 38 of our 96 points scored (39.6%)

On defense the Dolphins have held opponents to 1 TD and 2 FG's and the turnovers have resulted in 13 of our 97 points allowed (13.4%)

So its not necessarily how many turnovers you get but what you do with them. Of course more is always better.

The Dolphins have scored 10 TD's in 4 games but the D and special teams have setup half of the TD's. Opportunistic.

Great stats! Thanks for sharing.

I was curious how we were doing on the turnover differential.......

That is interesting. I think that going forward our STs turnovers and overall performance will improve based on who is playing. The overwhelming amount of injuries, especially at LB, have really hurt our STs. I think as we get most of these players back the STs will be much better. Some times we don't think of the trickle down effect of injuries. We have to pull players from STs to take the place of starters. This often leads to mistakes like our blocked punt, or giving up the kick off return by Spiller that cost us that game.
It is interesting to see how well our defense has handled turnovers and still kept teams from scoring. Either way though we have to find a way to take better care of the ball, especially in the redzone.

Being even in takeawys/giveaways is better than the Dolphins normally have been. The past several years the Dolphins have been negative in that category and most of the time (not always) the Defense just wasn't producing takeaways. In 2008 Miami lead the league with ( I think) a +16. Not surprising that was the last time they made the playoffs.

You at least want to be even and if you are in the +5 to +8 range that is very good, anything above that is phenomenal.

I like Jarvis Landry. But he needs to be taken off returns as a rookie. He needs to be concentrating on learning WR in our scheme and not dealing with the confidence issues and distractions of being a returner right now.

And TWO bad unforced fumbles on punt returns should definitely get you benched unless you are world class. Which he is not.

The punt block will get fixed.

What we are really looking at is 8 takeaways in 4 games. That's a good number, but we need to keep it up and hopefully improve it a little.

Miller needs to fix the fumbling problem ... yesterday. Tannehill had an INT that was the WR's fault and a few that were his fault. It's a learning curve in a new offense, but he is making progress. He needs to keep progressing though.

Right now we are fair ... but not good or bad. Our red zone scoring has always been strong so we will convert takeaways to points ... we just need to improve the turnover differential. That is going to take all 3 phases tightening up.

We won both of our games committing 3 turnovers.

That's pretty crazy. It was a problem in preseason also and needs to be cleaned up asap.

Were making these games a lot harder than they need to be.

Good point about the missing players. From the stats it appears that creating turnovers is more important than avoiding them. In one game where we didn't create turnovers (buffalo) we scored our season low 10 points. We never seem to win when we don't create several turnovers.

And the turnovers we have had haven't cost us a game so far.
In the kc loss we didn't turn it over and in buffalo the turnovers only resulted in 3 points.

This can't be correct because apparently Kevin Coyle has ruined our defense.

Anyone bitching about our defense doesn't know **** about football.

The defense has consistently setup the offense on short fields, in fact 6 times in the red zone, twice as much as any other team.

http://www.sportingcharts.com/nfl/stats/team-drives-starting-in-opponent-20-statistics/2014/

The offense has scored 17 times on 52 total possessions and 5 of them have come as a result of short field.
That leave the offense scoring 12 times on their own in 44 possessions without a turnover to start the possession.

granted the offense has scored TD's when we have gotten them close.

After the Game against the Bears the Dolphins are back to even with Turnover differential. 11 takeaways and 11 giveaway.

But our net Turnover points is now second in the league to Green Bay. We have only allowed 13 points off those 11 turnovers while scoring 40.

Rank Team Takeaway Points Giveaway Points Net Turnover Points
1 Green Bay Packers 56 19 37
2 Miami Dolphins 40 13 27
3 New England Patriots 52 26 26
4 San Diego Chargers 27 3 24
5 New York Giants 48 26 22
6 Atlanta Falcons 40 23 17
7 Arizona Cardinals 25 10 15
8 Denver Broncos 27 13 14
9 Baltimore Ravens 23 13 10
10 Carolina Panthers 45 36 9

Just curious but do you have info on how many turnovers the Dolphins have committed on the opponents side of the field? Red zone?

I don't want Landry taking all these hits at kr and pr bc he is our second best wr. he is 2nd in the league in kick return average, I think he is a good returner and will start to take care of the ball better. But, I don't want to see him get hurt back there

Of the 11 turnovers committed by Miami 2 came at the end of games and there was no possession to follow so I will leave those out.
Of the other 9 only one gave the opposition the ball in our red zone. We stopped that drive with a missed Field Goal attempt.
2 others were on our side of the field and resulted in the 2 FG's we have given up. The other 6 were deep in opposition territory.
One of those 6 drives resulted in the only TD given up. A 90 yard drive by Brady following Int.
The average starting position for the opposition after a turnover is their own 44 yard line.

By contrast we have started in the red zone 6 times after turnovers and another 2 after punt blocks.
Our average starting field position after turnover is the oppositions 23 yard line.
