Why they can beat the Patriots: The Miami Dolphins pose the biggest threat to New England’s AFC East crown this season. The Dolphins have been loading up on defense the past couple of years, and have one of the best front seven’s in the division. That front consists of Pro-Bowlers such as Ndamukong Suh, Cameron Wake, and Kiko Alonso.
Further, quarterback Ryan Tannehill continues to be a solid performer for the team, posting a 67% completion percentage and a 93.5 quarterback rating in 2016. If he can stay healthy, the Dolphins have enough power up front on defense to get to Tom Brady, which is the only proven way to beat the Patriots. That defense, combined with solid offensive options in Kenny Stills, Jarvis Landry, and Jay Ajayi, combine to make a formidable divisional foe for the New England Patriots.
Why the can’t beat the Patriots: The main issue with the Miami Dolphins of the past couple of years has been consistency. They have shown many flashes of great potential, and proved that by making the playoffs last season. However, they have had to experience both inconsistent play from their star players and key injuries, which has put a temporary hold on their team’s improvement. The Patriots are the most consistent team in football, and the Dolphins would have to have a near perfect game to beat them. It also does not help knowing that their weakest defensive unit is their secondary, and the Patriots are more than happy to take full advantage of that with a roster that includes more than six receivers who can consistently be relied on to make plays.
