Dolphins 2012 SALARY CAP situation; not a lot of room, folks

you don't backload contracts on guys in free agency...thats how you end up with diminishing returns and high hits on your cap down the line...you front load if anything

I disagree with you on a few points..

Backloading is fine if you are trying to make a run at the playoffs and beyond now...Mr. Ross is about to do this. Also, if the player is younger like Soliai and Langford they have a much better chance of playing out the life of the contract.

I DO agree you do not want to get in the practice of this, but I hate letting our players we drafted and developed get away.

I also disagree about letting Langford walk. I would work hard to sign both Soliai and Langford (obviously nothing guaranteed in a free market), but let both hit free agency if they did not take my deal prior to FA starting. There are some good NT's available this year in FA and we could play the market.

However, this is why I would sign Langford and perhaps backload the deal some: Randy Starks is in his last year of his deal. Let Starks play out the last year of the deal and you let him walk. In 2013, you would have Langford, Soliai and Ordrick for a starting D-line.

I think we overrate how much love Langford will get on the market. Solid and serviceable, but who gives him mega dollars? He can be had.

He's a very good LDE and since his backup (McDaniel) makes over $4 million a year, that's the minimum Langford would get.

I think in that case they'd let him walk and move Starks or Odrick over to LDE and have McDaniels become the primary backup.

we do have to let some guys go but that's going to happen anyway with a new coaching staff....we'll find the room under the cap

Ozzy rules!!

Id cut McDaniels, restructure Fasano or cut him, and cut Bell 100%.

We are 10 million under right now
Cut Fasano --2.75 million

Restructure Marshall his 2012 cap number is 10.6 mill maybe get it down to 9 saves 1
Re-Long 2012 number is 11.2 maybe get it down to 9 or 10 and extend him
Re-Starks 2012 number is 4.7 maybe get to 4
Re-Bell 2012 number is 5.2 his play has went down so get it to 3 or cut him

If we restructure these players we go from 12.75 to 18 million in space

If we can get to 18 we could bring in Flynn and make a few other moves after signing draft picks. Maybe make a play at a mid level players like Tyvon Branch or Mike Griffin to fill that safety hole we have had for years. Or we can throw the money at Vincent Jackson or Carl Nicks. Either way we should have money to make some good moves.

If you don't pay Wake what he's been long overdue this offseason then don't expect him to stay beyond 2012

every year at this time the number says this, but just before FA starts it becomes that.

 @ cutting Burnett.

Yup, I also thought the same thing when I read that. Burnett may have been a bit M I A in the beginning of the 1st few games, but by mid-season, was one of our better and more consistant defensive players.

i disagree with you on everything...to be honest...

Bell and Fasano could be cut for major savings or extending them can lower cap numbers

Extending Long could lower his number

Many are in the last year's of their deals. Extending them can provide cap relief.

For a big ticket FA, backloading some number can help get the job done in the short-term. That is why I am NOT an advocate for giving the farm up for RGIII. The draft is needed to replenish the roster in the coming years as many, many players' contracts are coming to an end.

Finally, I am not worried we got Dawn Aponte...lol.

So by cutting Joey Porter a third time we can save even more cap room! :brewskis:

The Dolphins last year played at $9 mill UNDER the cap. Losing Soliai adds to it. That website linked in the OP is trash and not even accurate
Okay, so the number that site gives isn't accurate. Wonderful. My point is that whatever the actual number is, not resigning Solai saves you nothing towards it.

hmmmm, did the salary cap forum get deleted?

Incognito makes almost $5 mill a year? I can do what he does for that and I am a skinny white boy.
