Everything that follows is based on pro-football-reference.com`s rating system.
This far...
* Fins had the 4th thoughest schedule in the NFL, behind Oakland, Denver and Jets in that order.
*AFC: Fins are 6th in overall ratings behind NE, Denver, KC, Balt. and Indy. Note that both the Ravens and Colts had a negative SoS(strenght of schedule) which means they faced below average quality of teams.
* AFC:Of the current seeded PO teams, Cin, Pit and Indy have a negative SoS.
* AFC:Miami is 5th in offensive rating and 7th in defense rating...

Could at least some of this weighed in a bit in the decision to keep the staff around for one more year? Given that one more win would have us in the thick of things for a PO spot... I do beleive we would`ve made the POs if we had even a average SoS this season...

I know we had a tough schedule and we had a bevy of injuries, but guess what? Every team has injuries, and this team was good enough to win at least one of our tough games (GB, DET, DEN, BAL). Had we won even one of those games, we'd be a pretty good bet to make the playoffs and I'd feel a lot better about this coaching staff. With that being said, Coyle stinks and he needs to be replaced, hopefully by Rex Ryan.

I think Coyle does some things very well, but I hate the way he manages the final 2 minutes of halves and games... The prevent mode has got to get lost from his playbook.

One year they'll be good enough. Until then we'll get articles explaining why they aren't.
Actually that wasnt taken from an article, its me messing around on that site and bringing it up here... I thought it was interresting. And if you go by their rating system, we were actually good this year, at least compared to the rest of the NFL...

It was a tough schedule......we had a lot of discussion about that during the pre-season.

I think the decision to not make a coaching change was based more on the progression of the team than the schedule impact. Just an opinion, but while not obvious in win/loss record, the team has improved and its most important part....Ryan Tannehill....has improved. Despite the tough schedule, we were in a position prior to the Ravens game to dictate our future. That didn't happen. So if you define success by the playoffs....and many of us do, then this year wasn't a success. However, if you look past that, at the individual performances of the players, the performance of the offense and the defense (at least for awhile), there was most definitely progress.

For comparison sake, last year, the Fins were 7th overall in the AFC with an even SoS and a negative rating of -0.8... They were 10th offensively and 5th defensively...

Never, ever like the prevent defense. You have to be aggressive from beginning to either end, or once you go ahead by 30 points with less then 3 minutes to play the game.

I posted a bit about the advanced metrics in the Tannehill thread (well, the 39587th Tannehill thread) but I absolutely agree that overall team improvement in efficiency measurements is the reason Joe is keeping his job. And from that point of view, I think Ross made a reasonable decision.

When you look at how we stack up in efficiency measurements, this team is simply better and more competitive across the board (except for special teams!) than it has been since 2002. I do think Joe Philbin deserves credit for that. And I am someone who desperately wanted Jim Harbaugh to come here and still feels as if Joe makes incredibly bad situational decisions at times. Yet despite that, I think this team made tangible progress this year under Hickey/Philbin, and I am willing to see what this coaching/front office team can do in year two.

I do think that addressing three key positions via free agency and the draft (OG, WR2, MLB) can make us a legitimate contender in 2015, as long as our QB continues to show growth. This is obviously a tall task for Dennis Hickey, because he has to make the right decisions.

As tough as it is for me to give Joe Philbin credit, there are encouraging signs behind the maddeningly frustrating stuff. Of course, this is probably just me looking for the silver lining now that we're stuck with him, but I felt this way earlier in the season after we'd blasted apart and given Denver a real run for their money.

Yup! I think its easy to get caught up with results, but the fact is that with a 16 game season, some strange things are going to happen when you consider that there is a lot of pure luck involved in the game of football...

next years schedule is something I am looking forward to. minus game four at home in London...ross is getting screwed.

jax on the road helps again though and teams like wash.,tenn., Houston have qb issues.

The schedule was obviously tough.

The biggest failure was caused by a lack of depth and a glaring hole or two.

I'm confident this is a playoff team with these things fixed.

a few plays here and there, a coaching decision or two different, and at least three players who were injured had stayed healthy and we'd be a 12-4 team. **** happens.

I just meant the tough schedule part. Sometimes it happens. Miami was good enough to almost beat 3 playoff teams in GB, DET, and DEN. But they aren't.

When will they be?
