[h=4]Contracted Players[/h]

Many look at this year's salary cap space without looking at the next two years, which all NFL teams have to do. As you see, we have only 23 players under contract in 2017 for a total cap hit of $96M. The projected cap for 2017 is $160M.

If we move Grimes this year, we save $8-5M next year. Misi would be $4.8M, and Mitchell at $4.5M, a total of $17.8M. Add in keeping Albert this year but not next year adds another $7M.
subtract that from the $96 M we started with, and we have only 19 players for $71M. That would leave $89M in cap space, and we could restructure Suh and Tannehill to bring us to roughly $100M in space for 2017.

We would only have 19 players but, with two drafts coming, would very likely add 15 or so cheap players at around $15M. So, we would have 34 players and around $80M in cap space.

These numbers will change a lot this off season. I just wanted to show the bigger picture of the salary cap and what Phans need to take into consideration.

This is a good thing when looking for a coaching job, a lot of flexibility...

I hope we can move on from Grimes this year. If the Dolphins plan on going LB, DE, or OL in the draft, we'll probably be stuck with Mr. Miko Ono one more year.

True story, and next year's space has a huge bearing on any contract signed this year which is not a one year deal or a tag. For example, if we re-sign OV at $10M a year and Miller at $5M a year (just throwing out numbers), they will likely cost a combined $8M (possibly less) on this year's cap with their signing bonus but, will be paid more next year. The same is true in signing any high priced FA.

A new coach can do pretty much whatever he wants in adding young, pricey FA's to build with or, wait a year to evaluate completely what he has. It is a VG position to be in.

the cap isnt' even really that restrictive this year, as we all know by now a few cuts and restructures and we have lotsa room, if we're frugal and we should be, we can even carry over a good chunk until 2017 and really reload

This is good going forward.

Yeah, we can free up $40M for this year with no big losses for the future. That's without restructures on Suh and RT, which I really can't see doing. Pay Suh his $23M this year because we don't need help, wait and see next year which is the last year he has guaranteed salary. On Tannehill, Dawn gave us an out for next year IF things do not work out with him and our new coach. no reason to do anything.

We can replace Grimes with a younger, as good or better CB, for the same money. Add in Hargraves and we have the makings of a secondary.

Cap is so flexible in todays NFL that almost every team in 2017 can look good cap wise. Good cap room is only a year away for every team. Keep that in mind when analyzing our own cap. Plus expect that Suh number to go up as they restructure his deal this year.

You do realize that basically every team in the NFL has cap two years from now. No team is in cap trouble for 2017 before the 2016 offseason has begun. There are only 5 teams that have less than 80 million in cap.
A better indicator of how much cap room a team might have in 2017 would come after free agency . Good info none the less.

That is a fact Dawg and I do keep it in mind. The difference with our team is that the players we have are young and cheap or movable, which I tried to show. Many of the other teams have "must keep" players. We do not. The new coaches coming in have a blank slate to deal with.

IMO, that includes Suh and Tannehill. Although Suh would hit us $15M in dead money if traded in 2017, we would also save $15M. He may not fit in with the plans a new coach has. This is why you do not restructure this year but wait until 2017. Same is true for Tannehill.

A new coach would fit he defense around Suh. You don't come to Miami and start finding was not to use a dominant elite DT.

Get a LB that can play and watch the magic happen.

I agree but, the new coach may not. This sounds kinda crazy but, he could decide to go for complete rebuild of the D to a 3-4. Who knows? In any case, there is no need to restructure Suh this year, as I cannot imagine needing the money. I could be wrong, and the new staff may want to add a bunch of FA's to try a quick turnaround. I will not be in favor of this but, it could happen.

This was what Tuna did.
