I,ve been watching the phins play a 4-3 defense for a while, i know how it works, and to a certain extent I (and many other fans) can see what the D is doing for that given play (whether we'll make a stop, or unfourtunately see a bad play coming). But with the new 3-4 defense I'm just wondering how were gonna set up our players. Jason Taylor at the DE position, or a hybrid linebacker? Is it gonna be Carter and Holiday at the ends, with Traylor in the middle? Or will JT play some DE while we have 4 Lb's out there?

What do you guys see happening

I see David Bowens at DE as well as hybird LB, he's a little bigger than JT, and can get at the QB as well with a little more weight and muscle.

yeah..that 3-4 defense will be one of our main defenses..and dom capers is a 3-4 mastermind.. it should be fun watching this team on D.. cant wait!

Hell yeah!!!!!!

I don't think Bowens has the speed to be a hybrid LB, however JT won't have a problem with a transition. It's gonna be excitting

We run a 4-3 Hybrid with 3-4 looks around 30-40%.

In the hybrid Jason taylor plays the OE position (Outside End)
Carter is a DE
Traylor is NT
And holliday is a DT

Also there is no FS or SS there is a Right safety and a left safety. Saban mixes up their positions so its harder for the QB to read the defense...

3-4 Set up

DE- Jason Taylor
DT- Vonnie Holliday
DE- Kevin Carter

LB- Zach Thomas
LB- Channing Crowder
LB- Ernie Sims
LB- Sedrick Hodge/Donnie Spragan

The question about what style of defense we r gonna run next year is one of the biggest question marks on the team right now. Its probably tied with "How well will Daunte play next year in our system?" as the most wondered question. Its gonna be truly exciting next year to see how its gonna unfold.

But we gotta find that "other" linebacker!!!

I still think that you are going to see a 5-2 defense that will be either 3-4, 4-3 or even stay 5-2 or even go 3-3 depending on the play that is called. At least that is what I saw last year.

You do realize that Bowens is freaking fast don't you?

And he did wel in that position last year as Taylor's only back up

In the 3-4 JT switches to LB....

He's an edge rusher, not a bull rush guy...

SWEET LOU:
The style of Defense we're gonna run next year has NEVER been a mystery. When Saban 1st got here he said we were switching to a 3-4. Last year we played that 3-4 (and thrived)...Now we even got a guy (Dom Capers) who is famous for mastering the 3-4. When was there ANY doubt about what scheme were going to use THIS year??

Apparently a lot for "Sweet Lou" since the team didn't run the 3-4 all that much last year. Maybe 25% of the time.

Saban runs a hybrid defense that uses the 4-3 and the 3-4. He's been on record saying he wants to get the 3-4 schemes in the system up to even with the 4-3 calls.

here is something about the subject, you will have to decide for yourselves, I am only posting it.

There has been some debate - and in some cases, insistence - that new Dolphins head coach Nick Saban will run a 3-4 defense. In making such assertions, press and fans alike take those numbers literally, anticipating only three down linemen to face off against the interior offensive line.........

The style of defense is generally is how many people are on the line. A 3-4 is called that because you have 3 people on the line and 4 people off the line. A 4-3 has 4 people on the line and 3 people on the line. Going by that logic, last year Miami played a 5-2. They 5 people on the line and two people back. After the play, depending on the call did they actually switch to a 3-4 and a 4-3. What they did wasn't exactly obvious unless you looked at the play closely.

Basically it is not easy to say Miami was a 3-4 since they almost always lined up as a 5-2.
