Since 2000, the Phins have drafted 17 players in the third round. I would consider a total of 3 of them (bolded) to be "good". Thats a 17.6% success rate. I am assuming Billy Turner pans out. Quit complaining about a 3rd.
2014: Billy Turner

2013: Dallas Thomas
2012: Olivier Vernon & Michael Egnew
2011: None
2010: John Jerry
2009: Patrick Turner
2008: Kendall Langford
2007: Lorenzo Booker
2006: Derek Hagan
2005: Channing Crowder
2004: Will Poole
2003: Wade Smith & Taylor Whitley
2002: Seth McKinney
2001: Travis Minor & Morlon Greenwood
2000: Ben Kelly

I suppose if Dennis Hickey is as bad as Dave Wannstedt\Rick Spielman, Nick Saban\Randy Mueller, and Jeff Ireland then we have bigger things to worry about than losing a 3rd rounder.

Wannstedt started this downward spiral with all of his personnel moves and terrible draft picks.

People complaining about giving up a third are crazy for the very reason you point at with this post, OP. Were getting a proven player. Not sure how anyone could be upset with this.

How the hell are you going to say billy turner, who has never had a career nfl start, is more successful of a pick than Channing Crowder? Hell John Jerry has even started before. Sorry but that list doesn't make much sense, no offense.

guess we are looking like LB in the 1st round this year

The point is, unless you're a god at drafting you're more than likely going to miss on your third round selection more often than not.

Good OP, nice run down, I was thinking they would go WR in Round #3 so went with the proven commodity in Stills over drafting say a guy like Derek Hagan again, as we know they would. Why take the risk? It's hit and miss after Round #2 with WR's and with MIA's luck, another Hagan would be picked. Stills is young and entering his prime now, good for a few years here anyway.

Exactly. But the data provided is inaccurate. Saying Billy Turner is a better pick than Channing Crowder, John Jerry, and Dallas Thomas is inaccurate since he has never even played a NFL game. I agree the Dolphins suck at drafting in the mid rounds, but they have done better than the OP suggests.

Channing Crowder and John Jerry are proven average players. I am being generous to the success rate of Miami's third round selections by granting that Turner pans out. Maybe he won't and then a third rounder is even more irrelevant.

If you think Stills is worth a 3rd round pick then fine, I'm not sure yet, but it's a perfectly reasonable argument. But this type of argument (using past selections of 1 team to change the value of a pick) can never be taken seriously. The obvious reason is that different people are in charge in different years. What more, the same can be (and has been) said about Dolphin 2nd round picks. And if you took that kind of attitude maybe you would have been in favor of trading last year's second for an average starter, in which case the Dolphins would have missed out on Jarvis Landry.

Incorrect...the Dolphins have missed on their 3rd round picks more often then not.

Matt Schaub, NaVorro Bowman, Jimmy Graham, Jason Witten, Lance Briggs, Ronde Barber, Joe Montana, Jason Taylor, Terrell Owens, John Lynch, Curtis Martin, Travis Kelce, Keenan Allen, Dwayne Allen, Russell Wilson, Mohamed Sanu, T.Y. Hilton, DeMarco Murray, Chris Culliver...all 3rd round picks off the top of my head and there are plenty more.

3rd rounders 1999 to 2011

442 total players

55 have started 3 seasons of more
29 have started 5 seasons of more
10 have started 7 seasons or more

I'm fine with the trade. Stills had good numbers last year in an offense that featured multiple WRs who are good.

He's proven. That's more than you can say for any 3rd rd pick.

This argument I can get on board with. It is a much stronger point in valuing a 3rd round pick.

No brainer. Ellerbe was too expensive and we were going to release him anyway. So a 3rd for Stills? I would do it everyday of the week. Great trade for us. Wallace, Stills, Landry, Cameron and maybe Clay? Now we need a MLB and brusing RB and we will make noise in playoffs.
