This topic has been brought up a few times in recent posts..

Hiring a general manager with the coach already in place isn't the ideal situation in the NFL. But it's not unusual in recent years. Among the 18 general managers hired since 2010, nine took their jobs with a head coach already in place.

Three of the NFL's most successful teams from the 2013 regular season — Kansas City, Seattle and Carolina — hired their general manager after they hired their coach.

So 9 of 18.. Simple Math tells me 50% of the time. Where's the ArmandoFox to blame Aponte on those other 9?

But do any of these teams have an Aponte in place? Armando does not approve of these facts.

Yet we are just one "dysfunctional mess" according to most of the media.

I'm glad someone did the research on it. I knew it wasn't uncommon but I didn't feel like doing the digging.

Although it was a slow year for head coaching candidates, I'd have rather started over. I don't think Philbin did a very good job. I don't think Mike Sherman did a very good job. I actually thought Kevin Coyle did a worse job than either of him, yet no one's talking about it.

I would have taken a chance on Malzahn -- as I said in my thread on the subject -- or failing that interviewed Darrel Bevel or Vic Fangio or Ray Horton or Dave Toub (who turned us down last time). It's better to not go through it this way.

At the same time, now that we are doing it this way you've got a guy like Jim Harbaugh who's contract is coming up next year. Malzahn will have another year at Auburn to season. Maybe Philbin and Coyle and company turn their acts around (though I'm not holding my breath on that one).

In any case, this isn't that strange. People should stop acting as if every good GM out there is the Kim Jong Un of his organization.

I don't know, but if it was me and I was going to be a GM, I'd have a pretty good
level of confidence that I'd be able to handle whatever was thrown at me.

If you're scared, don't take the job.

But then, I'm a man-sized element, and, the Fritz-Pollard Alliance doesn't have to tell me what
to do.

Strontium? I'm betting it's Strontium.

LOL.....The funny thing is I was refering to myself in wargameing
terms. "Element" being any sub unit of a larger unit.

Watch out if I refer to myself as a "Self ordering stand"...Then, you'll know that I'm
playing GDW's Command Descision.

And I'm a stand that doesn't need a command stand to act. I'm "Self Ordering"
which means I'm Mayhem.

I think Philbin is on a short leash. If we have similar results next year the new GM will be able to turn the spotlight on Philbin and he could be gone. Then the new GM will be able to bring in his/her own coach.
