Last April the Dolphins used the first pick of the draft to select Jake Long. The New York Jets used their first round pick, the sixth pick overall, to select outside linebacker Vernon Gholston.
Advantage Dolphins!
While Long has come pretty much as advertised so far and will start at offensive left tackle for Miami in the regular-season opener, Gholston has not quite started so fast. In fact, he's been awful.
I had Michael Lombardi, a 20-year NFL personnel man with Oakland, Cleveland and other teams, on my radio show over the weekend. First of all, he doesn't think the Jets are going to be very good at all. He picked them fourth in the AFC East, behind New England, Buffalo and Miami.

That's what I'm talking about!

That guys on crack..... Who knows what Gholston will do, there has been rookies that start out slow then tear it up. We'll see down the road what he is.

Just so we know Michael Lombardi a few months ago had this big article at si.com where he was discussing his days w/ the 49ers and he used a certain play and year as an example except that he got the year and play wrong. I wouldn't trust anything he has to say.

You guys can win the draft war in week 1, you need your pick to start we don't. We'll see years down the road who has done a better job.

In fairness, if all goes the way it should, we daggone well BETTER beat the Jets draft pick simply because of draft position if nothing else.

That said, I'm glad we didn't take Gholston. "Takes plays off." is abou the equivilent of "Nagging back injuries" in red flag status to me.

Dude Gholston "MAY" be good one day but there is no reason he went #6 overall. Coming up to draft time a statement like this was made.....if you look at him on tape he is a late first rounder, if you look at his workout numbers he is a top 15 pick, if you see him without a shirt hes a top 10 pick. So he had a big game against Michigan well he stunk it up against LSU.

The jets spent the farm and probably screwed their future with this off season. It better pay off or Jet fans will riot and tear down the city cause y'all are crazy like that.

BUT you pay off is gonna have to start week 2 after the Dolphins win in week one

If there's one salient fact we know about the NFL, it's that in the 88yr history of this league, many a player has been a 'gameday guy'; he might practice like poop weekdays, but come Sunday...SHAZAM!!

Gholston didn't stink it up against LSU, he played well, he just didn't get any sacks. I watched that game and thought he did well, considering he was constantly double teamed, and he had a few QB hurries. He just didn't have sacks, thats a common mistake by people thinking he did bad that game.

A lot of the reason he was a 6th overall pick was it was a weak draft this year. I think the Jets wanted Darren McFadden more, and so did I. Dolphins had the 1st overall pick, so they better have gotten the better player for their sake. Time will tell how good Gholston becomes.

Yeah i was a weaker draft class..and in the long haul gholston may be a stud but when you pay a a guy 40 mill with 21 mill guaranteed he needs to get his *** in gear and get on the field. yes we needed our pick to start so we picked a strong stable very very good player. And even with the money and guys the Jets brought in with the #6 pick overall you want him to be a starter. I dont know im not at the camps but i hear he is underperforming i hope he steps it up i want to see Gholston v Long week one

I am just happy to REVIVE our rivalry with the stinkin a$$ Jets. Oh yeh Jets fans, the reports from your OWN fan forums was that Gholston was stinking it up and not living up to the hype. That came from your own fan forum.

we all can agree on that, but I think we can kind of come to a middle ground and say that Gholston has been a disappointment in camp. And as I've said in the past, it's not because he's not good, he's just way too raw, and asking someone that raw to play OLB is asking a bit too much right now.

Just wondering if Gholston couldn't beat out Thomas who it appears only had 3 sacks last year...just how good at this time is Gholston?

He has't played a regular season game yet, he wasn't expected to be a starter this year. He has not had a good camp or preseason but that was to be expected. Not every rookie is ready to start day 1. 2 years ago Mario Williams was called a bust before he played a down. Let's be a little patient w/ the guy, I know if he was a dolphin you would be.

Well said..

No offense though, I'm hoping he's a bust :D

2 years ago Thomas had 8 1/2 sacks and Gholston wasn't drafted to start right away. Thomas is a good player and we expect a bounce back year w/ pace on the other side. W/ that logic I guess Merling is a bust b/c he couldn't beat out Vonnie Holliday who had 2 sacks last year? henne is a bust b/c he couldn't beat out a QB who was 1-7 as a starter a year ago? It's silly to call guys busts before they have played a reg season game.
