I know its early to access them but... you can do an eye test.
Herbert is a tall athletic strong armed playmaker. He looks like he belongs and can be a great QB than can win games and not just manage them.
Tua is a soft arm, small, non athletic accurate passer that was surrounded with talent at Alabama. He is a game manager/scheme QB at best.
As far as relievers not getting open, its half Tuas fault. He throws a softer ball which takes longer to get to the receiver. This results in DBs getting to the ball and everything is going to be contested.
I'm welcome to criticism, but please back it up with facts and not emotions.
A little bit of a knee jerk reaction I think.
Look, Herbert is good, and I am on record before the draft saying that we should stay put and draft whichever one was available to us or whichever we felt better about if we liked both and both were available, but that we shouldn’t trade up for either one of them.
However, where do you get “soft arm” from? He’s got an above average arm and has flashed some traits that are similar to Drew Brees and Russel Wilson. That is just my opinion, but that’s a pretty heigh ceiling.
As for Herbert, he has the tools to be great. Will San Diego give him the support he needs to become a winner? Tua is a rookie and is learning, but I think he has flashed a very live arm, in the previous 3 games borderline elite accuracy with some of the throws he make (Not last night so much he was clearly off).
Tua has also demonstrated natural instincts and a real feel for the game at times and he has also demonstrated that like all rookies, he can get flustered with pressure when his Oline gets blown up and his coaches don’t make mid game adjustments To deal with all of those stunts they were throwing at him.
He needs the rest of this season, including buttocks kickings like last night (an ass kicking is an excellent educator), a proper off season and pre-season, and then next year I think is where you can make an opinion like this without it sounding like you are too quick to jump to conclusions based on such a small sample size.
Rookie Qb’s first year I’m looking for flashes of the traits that made them elite prospects in college, improvement, and expect adversity, but then want to see if he is able to overcome said adversity which is one of the most important tools anyone can have in any walk of life, but definitely in football At that position.
Tua played poorly last night, the Oline acted like they’d never seen stunts before and couldn’t block it to save their lives, and the coaches failed to prepare the entire team for what Vic “F’in Fangio threw at them not just pre-game in their preparation but during game in their lack of effective adjustments, and Tua looked like he was overwhelmed.
The other way to look at it is there is a lot to learn from in that film and that experience.
