Herbert is the type of QB that I prefer as well... that said, neither guy has proved anything yet.
Though, I will grant that Herbert looks like a guy who will be a gunslinger in this league for a long time. I would have rather we'd taken him... but I haven't closed the book on Tua yet. In the long run, he may touch pass and game manage his way into my heart, but in order to do that... he has to win, and currently, we are winning despite him, rather than because of him.
This type of logic is flawed and ill tell you why. First off, I have skin in the game as I play fantasy ball and have herbert as a QB. I like him a lot. Im not a hater or anything like that.
Until at least next season we will not know for sure that Herbert will be a gunslinger in this league for a long time. In the hot take era, it is easy to make these kind of statements, but they have no basis in reality. Why?
Because the first offseason is when D coordinators have a ton of time to sit down and analyze QBs. This is why Lamar Jackson went from MVP candidate to mediocre QB this year. It’s why Kapernick went from SB QB to pretty terrible in one season. DCs found all the Throws they could not make and basically make them make those throws far more in their 2nd full season. The elite QBs adjust and make those throws. That is why they are elite QBs.
My point is that I suspect Herbert will be a great QB but we need to see how he does next season first. He has issues with accuracy and DCs will find throws he struggles with and he will have to make them far more often.
If he adjusts and makes those throws, I definitely will agree that he’s a stud QB and gunslinger.
All that said, Tua has the exact tools to adjust faster and make every single NFL throw with accuracy. So while he is struggling early and Herbert is not, it simply does not translate to long term yet. Tua is making fast reads but hes not seeing guys getting open, because quite honestly they are not. He has made a lot of rather difficult throws into tight windows but apparently that’s not good enough for many folks here who have already deemed him a bust.
If Tua was missing tons of open guys and panicking and throwing picks, I’d be more concerned. But he has not shown me any real reason to feel panic yet. The reality is we have no route runner close to the level of Keenan Allen. Mike Williams is better than Preston Williams. Our TE’s are not as skilled as Hunter Henry and when Ekeler returns, he is far better than Matt Breida.
We have a bad supporting cast around Tua and so as a result he will have bad games. If we had a fully built OL, a stud RB and a strong WR core Already I’d be very concerned, but thats not the case.
I just find it funny how people say Tua needs a good OL and WRs to be good. You could apply that exact same argument to Tom Brady.
