Tim Semisch, an undrafted rookie who is one of the team’s most intriguing camp players.
Semisch wasn’t even signed immediately after the draft. He made the team after a rookie mini-camp tryout.
He’s the ultimate project — a 6-foot-8, 267 pound player who was primarily on special teams at Northern Illinois. He had just 10 catches for 100 yards and three touchdowns in his college career, serving primarily as a backup and on special teams.
He also ran a 4.98 in the 40-yard dash at his Pro Day, although the Dolphins aren’t expecting burning speed out of him.
Northern Illinois was primarily a running team, so Semisch didn’t have many opportunities in the passing game. But he showed his ability to catch the ball in May and June practices with the Dolphins. His 6-8 frame is noticeable at practice.
He’d be an ideal candidate for the practice squad while he develops for a year, but it’s possible he could make the 53-man roster if the Dolphins feel he could be a red zone threat.
The Dolphins have two other tight ends who might be long shots to make the team but have to at least be considered bubble players because of previous pro experience.
