  • The Dolphins returned to the practice field for the first time since their 16-10 loss to the Atlanta Falcons. Sunday’s practice was mainly centered on special teams, form tackling and fundamentals. Miami particularly struggled with tackling in its first preseason outing. “We had a little bit of extra time, we got an eight-day week,” Dolphins head coach Joe Philbin said. “So I felt this was an opportunity to take advantage of it.”
  • Miami running back Knowshon Moreno showed some progress Sunday. After coming off the physically unable to perform list last week, Moreno started with only individual drills. But Moreno did some competitive work in one-on-one passing drills and made several sharp cuts on his knee, which was recently operated on. Moreno also made some nice catches in drills. It is unknown when Moreno will return, but he’s making strides.
  • The Dolphins have narrowed their field on punt returns. Wide receivers Marcus Thigpen, Jarvis Landry and Damian Williams were the three players fielding punts Sunday in practice. Miami has an interesting decision to make. Landry had a 48-yard punt return and appears capable of handling that position. “I just made one cut, got vertical and made a play,” Landry said. “I can’t say thank you to coach [Darren] Rizzi enough for giving me a chance and giving me an opportunity to really do it after not having too much film of doing it.” If the Dolphins can find a kick returner, Thigpen’s spot could be in jeopardy. Thigpen has been Miami’s primary kick returner the past two seasons.
  • On the injury front, Dolphins defensive lineman A.J. Francis will miss multiple practices with a knee injury. Rookie running back Damien Williams also was sidelined after getting carted off the field Friday. But he did some jogging in practice, which is promising. Fellow running back Mike Gillislee also didn’t finish practice. Miami cornerback Cortland Finnegan also was not present but indicated on social media that he had a death in the family.
  • The Dolphins will return to the practice field Monday at 8 a.m. ET for practice No. 13. Miami is preparing for Saturday’s preseason game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Most skill players don't want to play special teams, let alone a 2nd rnd WR being asked to field Punts.

Yet Jarvis publicly thanks the coach for the opportunity. Kid Is the definition of football player.

I already don't want the kid touching punts or kickoffs.

The most obsessive word around in the last decade.(Depth). We finally have it.

Regardless of how Jarvis Landry pans out (and he is looking good so far), I gotta say I love having guys like him and Tripp with that total team attitude. James and Turner seem to have pretty good attitudes as well. Hopefully they are all as dedicated and hard working as Landry.

Did Hickey did what we fail to do around here and a long time. Draft a no doubt Stud in the second round..

Landry isn't even a starter. In the grand scheme of things being a 2nd round pick is far from being a status that elevates a guy from special teams. Reggie Bush was first overall and did it and I'm sure we could come up with a long list of other top 10 picks that played special teams. The Dolphins have an abundance of WR's now and Jarvis wants make an impact it will first be in special teams one would think.

Dion Jordan, for example.

This team doesn't have 1s 2s or 3s at WR. The guy with the right match ups for the defensive scheme gets the ball, landry wasn't drafted in the second rnd to be a #4 WR. The guy represents everything philbin wants in a WR, I guarantee he's going to get lots of burn.

OJ McDuffie was a pretty good WR and that was his primary job returning kicks for us his first year in the leaugue as a first round draft pick

I think Damien Williams could be in for the return job as well..?

Though i may be wrong and it was the wr Williams returning in week 1

That really seems to have been part of Hickey's draft Game plan as several of his picks were team captains in college.

Five of Miami’s first six drafted players -- James, Landry, Turner, tight end Arthur Lynch and linebacker Jordan Tripp -- were team captains for their respective college teams.

I had serious reservations when they selected Hickey, and until time proves it they will remain....but I have warrmed up to him, with the point you make as one of the reasons.
