Orchard Park, N.Y. — One of the Buffalo Bills' first orders of business this offseason was releasing underperforming defensive end Mario Williams.
Williams quickly found another home with the Miami Dolphins, who handed him a two-year, $17 million contract. However, Williams hasn't lived up to the deal. He has just one sack in six games and played just 13 of the Dolphins' 55 defensive snaps in their win over the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 16.
"We've made some changes, we're moving some guys around, trying to find the best lineup for what we're doing," Dolphins coach Adam Gase said in a conference call with Buffalo media. "We cut back some of his snaps to try to make sure we use him as efficient as possible and put him in on some situations that are more pass down emphasis. Just trying to make sure when he's able to go it's full go. We've had a lot of snaps on defense leading up to and in this last game. We were averaging like 75 plays a game on defense and guys were playing a lot against the run. Between Mario and J.J. they were getting pounded on pretty good and I think it finally had caught up to us in terms of those guys taking so many snaps."
In his final season in Buffalo, Williams questioned Rex Ryan's scheme while some of his teammates openly questioned his effort. So is Gase happy with Williams' effort in Miami so far?
"He's done a good job in practice and there's been a lot of positives coming out of training camp and through the beginning of the season," Gase said. "I think some of our issues as far as what's happening on defense is we've done such a poor job on offense. We've left those guys out on the field. When you're taking on the blockers that they are the amount of times they are, I think our guys got worn down a little earlier than what we needed to. Last week we were just trying to get some fresh bodies going to try to get these guys back to being as healthy as possible and fresh as possible.
