It turns out there is no chapter in the instruction manual for coaching an NFL team that explains how to handle a hurricane turning your season upside down before it even starts.
There’s no section on proper procedure for moving past an assistant coach getting fired for sending a video of himself doing cocaine to a Las Vegas entertainer.
And what’s the protocol for those times when a starting linebacker disappears the night before a game and the team is on edge as it fears the absolute worst?
If he has time during what’s left of this offseason, maybe Adam Gase can write some helpful additions to that handbook now that he’s survived coaching the 2017 Miami Dolphins. The insanity of that season was such that losing the starting quarterback and middle linebacker to preseason knee injuries barely registers.

My only criticism of Gase last year is bringing in Cutler. As a QB whisperer he should have known Cutlers' limitations, which were many. I would have rather seen Fales play the entire season or even trade for a back-up who hasn't been given a chance. A was tough year starting with pivotal injuries on both sides of the ball in preseason.

He probably did know his limitations but also knows Matt Moore’s limitations and felt Cutler gave us the best chance to win, albeit small without Tannehill.

EXACTLY! It says more about Moore than it does about Cutler. Notice when Moore was forced to be the starter and carried those responsibilities including teams scouting specifically against him the results.

It's one thing to come in cold when others teams haven't game planned for you vs. coming as the starter with the week of prep prior and teams game-planning specifically to exploit your weaknesses.

I truly believe that Gase believed he could win last year between the Jay Ajayi running game we had the year before and an improved defense. Loosing Albert hurt that running game and the defense did not not end up being opportunitisic will our defensive coordinator leaving to coach the Broncos. Cutler plan was not to loose games just to manage them with the phins but we just needed more help than he could provide. From a statistical standpoint Cutler played ok. My real gripe with Gase and Cutler it seemed when the opponents on our schedule appeared to be a tough game Cutler got stashed on IR and Moore was thrown in. Maybe that was chance or maybe it was to make the Gase decision on Cutler look better.

I don't think Gase has learned anything from last year as he is repeating the same behavior....in this case recommending that the front office sign a former crappy QB (Broke Osweiler) that Gase has coached.

Considering the amount of the contract, he hasn’t promised or commited anything to Brock. I think he’s here to allowed to compete for a roster spot. That’s it.

I have to disagree and should have gone with Matt Moore since had some form of Chemistry with our players. Bringing in Cutler didn't help because it obvious the players didn't respond well. At the end of day Cutler didn't bring anything to the table not even energy to ignite or pump up his team.

Agreed. And I think it directly led to some of the acting out in frustration we saw from star players. Had they gone w the “rally around Moore / let’s win this for Tannehill” etc mantra it would have made the losing easier to swallow. The ultimate slap in the face was hiring a retired bum of a player for $10 million and shoving him in as the guaranteed starter. I believe players lost respect for Gase due to that move. From a player’s POV, the guy who got you to the playoffs w a 3-1 (or technically 2-1 with a save) record and then had his head detached from his body in a road playoff game in one of the most vicious cheap shots you’ll ever see - yet only missed one play and went 27-32 or something setting a fins record for post season proficiency w 14 or 15 straight completions- doesn’t even get a CHANCE to compete for the job - had to look terrible. Bring in Cutler. Fine. But at least say you have a competition through Pre season instead of handing the job to the most underserving QB in the league.

If Cutler was just marginally better than Moore, why spend 10 million on just a little better. That extra 10 million would have come in handy this off-season. I would have had no problem throwing 10 million for someone worthy. Cutler was bad in every aspect from mechanics to leadership and everything in between. I can't fault Tannebaum for Cutler and his evaluation of Cutler.

I believe is Moore would have started we would have went 8-8. It doesn’t stop at Cutler either he brought in Julius Thomas which was a another major fail on his part.

The issue that still haunts me the most is that Gase (and maybe everyone else in the team) was unable to detect that the O-line coach, Chris Foerster, was effectively out of control with a very serious problem until the cocaine snorting video appeared on the internet, thanks to the Las Vegas entertainer. My concern is that Adam may be so focused just on the team winning that he isn't properly in touch with his key people whom he interacts with every day. Normality, integrity and any semblance of professionalism were lost a very long time ago when a trusted experienced coach is videoing himself from his office, snorting cocaine to impress his favorite hooker in between meetings as part of his routine 18 hour workday.
In hindsight we should be very thankful to the Las Vegas entertainer as the whistleblower just for exposing it on the internet, otherwise we may still have Coach Foerster on the staff.

It is odd that no one knew - or said “hey I think this guy has a problem”. I imagine it would be hard to hide that type of thing from every other coach, player, staffer etc.

When I saw Thomas’ first time in uniform I said “holy cow - I don’t recall him being so...large”. He was so broken down / couldn’t jump anymore / took about five minutes to turn upfield after a catch in the flat / looked so out of shape. Yuck.
