Dolphins head coach Adam Gase said he hasn’t talked to running back Jay Ajayi about the team’s draft plans but is impressed by both Ajayi and DeVante Parker in the first two days of the Dolphins’ voluntary veterans minicamp. A front runner has emerged, stepping to the forefront of the Miami Dolphins’ most concerning position group.

Jay Ajayi doesn't have any real competition.

He is our only RB that has a chance of being an everydown bellcow, who could possibly get 1,000 yds between the tackles.

Kenyan Drake, Damien Williams, Daniel Thomas, and Isaiah Pead are all complementary pieces.

 No need to pretend like there is a competition.

Have we forgotten the demise of the RB position? The fact that more teams turn to committees? The key to me to successfully run the ball is quite simple:

1. Have an offensive line that is talented. Did we address that this offseason? Are we healthier? Is there a gameplan and coaching commitment to do this?
2. Stopping the run and getting off the field quicker. Last year, to seemed there were games where the defense was on the field for 8-9 minutes. The offense barely played and seemed were pressed to pass.

I think ajayis can be a VERY good back...in his limited time last year he showed some really good stuff...more reps and with the first team will only help him improve. He was a beast in college.

I agree, guys like AP and Todd Gurley (if he stays healthy) are on a different plane than most RBs, but if you look at the RB stables of the SB champions you'll see a lack of these Elite tier RBs (especially when compared to the teams of the 80's and 90's). O line is the absolute #1 priority for a good rushing attack, the fact that so many teams are successful in plugging in other backs when their workhorse goes down shows you a solid stable of backs behind a stud line is really what you need. Having a rare elite RB is nice, but far from being a necessity in today's NFL.

And as we all know, having a line that keeps the QB upright is also pretty darn important ;)

I think that we may learn something about our new coach, Adam Gase, from his comments about Ajayi. To date, Jay seems to have had more positive public comments from Gase than any other player on the roster. One side of me thinks that the Coach is being honest. The other side of me still expects us to sign an experienced guy like Arian Foster, if fully healthy and Ajayi will share the workload.
It was pretty rare for Joe Philbin to go out of his way to repeatedly compliment any inexperienced players at the press conferences. We got used to him saying player X did well or looks good but he still has a lot to improve on, blah, blah, blah (so the player wouldn't get too big a head). Maybe Gase is more candid than we are accustomed to, but maybe he is also a lot more media savvy and he is deliberately using the media to encourage his young RB, knowing that Ajayi will welcome and responds to the attention.

Hard to pay real attention to what Coaches say in todays world. They're pretty much positive all the time or they don't say anything unless they are on their way out the door. JJ & Parcells are the only Dolphin coaches who comes to my mind that weren't always cherry coating his players to the public. But I guess we're in a new age in which players are more delicate lol...........

Gase seems to fit the, if you can't say anything nice don't say anything. I expect it now and thus take it all with a grain of salt. Have to see some actual facts before taking his word on things. But behind closed doors I'm sure he's a bit more on the critical side ....

.

That's true, but hearing Gase talk about Ajayi on Joe Rose it was nice to hear him say basically "Hes our #1 running back and has the skills to do the job well" usually wed get an answer like "all those guys at RB are competing yadayadayada"....He at least gave Ajayi the nod as our main back. Maybe Lamar Miller would still be here if he got a little of that.

Wait, I thought we re-signed Travis Minor. What about Lamar Gordon?

All joking aside, Jay has everything you look for in a lead back. I'm looking forward to watching him.
