Dolphins complete coaching staff, no QB coach?

What do you think about Chad Pennington as QB coach?

He never played in a West Coast system that I recall and never tutored a backup whoever turned into anything and either way his style of play is ultra conservative.

Other than the fact that players like him... what exactly is there to like?

He is a very smart QB and would have fit better in a West Coast offense in my opinion. I think he would make a great coach. I have thought that since he was playing for the Dolphins.

I don't agree. People always think that West Coast just = short passing game, but it's not that simple. The emphasis on horizontal spacing vs. vertical spacing doesn't always make for shorter throws. The throws are just often more conservative. There's also an emphasis on mobility in the West Coast that didn't fit Pennington at all.

In my view Pennington spent most his career in the offense that best suited him: the Erhart/Perkins. The emphasis on the running game and the short, controlled passing game (to convert third downs), was his best bet to excel as a pro and in his time in New York that's what he ran. Under Henning we ran a neutered version of Air Coryell (in other words, the Joe Gibbs variant), that also suited Pennington fairly well, since though he didn't have a powerful arm he was accurate deep and always played with good timing.

Anyway, I just disagree that Smart QB automatically = good coach. That's a fallacy people always seem to want to make and I just don't buy it. Show me one backup of Pennington's that ever became a legitimate pro. For every Jason Garrett and Gary Kubiak there's a bunch of Bernie Kosars who can't even get an NFL job and Bart Starrs who ride their legacy into failure as coaches.

He's very intelligent and understands what it takes to play QB. He knows how to use what he has at his disposal to maximum effect, such as his adjusting for his own limited abilities. I think Pennington as a coach would be much different to Pennington as a player stylistically.

The simple reason the Dolphins did not hire a QB coach is because they want to show Manning he can sign here and not be pressured into having a QB coach he does not know/like. I feel they want him to have some say in who his QB coach is to entice him to sign here.

Peytons former QB Coach was hired as the WR Coach for the Arizona Cardinals.

Adams coached at northern iowa...janoris jenkins

Except Jenkins went to Northern Alabama.

And people are reading WAY too much into us not having a QB coach. There are coordinators that double dip as a position coach and as coordinator. Between Sherman, Zac Taylor, Philbin, and even Ken O'Keefe (who was OC/QB coach at Iowa) I'm sure we're fine.

To get sherman they probably had to offer big money as a oc position and in order to justify the cost they had to eliminate extra qb coach money because he will demand big money being he was looked at as a head coach with some teams.
