Dolphins complete interview with Mike Zimmer

Kind of amazing that no one is griping about the Dallas connection..."but with a name like Zimmer its got to be good!"

PORTFIN: what makes you think this? how is he so "ready" to be a h/c? what more than anyone else sets him apart?

please EXPLAIN in detail. not what you have HEARD, but what you have seen from the guys career that makes you so "excited"?

i know one game doesnt mean much, but his playoff game this past weekend was a BUST on his part. they got WORKED! his defense didnt do diddly! but besides that game, i just dont see all the hyper activity for the guy. a quality coach for sure, but i dont see anything leaps and bounds from him over a zillion other assistants or candidates out there.

explain in detail WHAT YOU SEE from him.

Sorry it took me a while to see your post, NRA.

As I've said in a couple threads before, I watch a lot of Bengals games. I see more of their games than any other team except for Miami, because I go to a bar to watch them and my friends are mostly Bengals fans. So, over the course of the last three years or so I've seen probably 35 or so of their last 48 games (excluding playoffs.) While not claiming to be a Bengals expert by any means, I'm only saying this to point out I'm not just picking a random candidate and throwing my support behind him.

The thing I like about Zimmer, especially this season, is he loses Jonathan Joseph in the offseason and Leon Hall in week 10 and still ends up with the 7th ranked defense this season. The Bengals D, at least in my opinion, doesn't have a lot of big names that stand out, but they play well as a unit. He does a good job with what he has to work with. I will admit his defense was average in 2010 with a ranking of 15, but in 2009 they ranked #4, and Zimmer was voted (by Pro Football Weekly and CBSSports.com) as the NFL's assistant coach of the year. I grant you he does not have the most exotic defensive schemes, but his units are generally solid and his players play hard for him.

He has been an assistant coach for a long time, and given the connections he's made I think he could put together a better staff than most first time coaches. Do I KNOW this? No. It is just a guess based on his experience. But I do know he fires up his players and they rally around him. Listen to one of his players talk about him sometime if you want their opinion of him and they can't speak highly enough of him. I also like that he is flexible, having run a 3-4 defense while in Dallas. He has also presided over defenses that have given up the fewest yards in the league during his time in Dallas. To me this shows he has had consistent success, and is not just a flash in the pan coordinator who had one or two good seasons.

So, for me, a big part of why I like him is sustained success. I like some of the other candidates as well, but I just think of the people we've interviewed, I feel most comfortable with Zimmer.

Look, I'm not guaranteeing Zimmer would be the most successful out of the bunch; everyone has their own candidates and ideas about who would be the best fit, and for me that's Zimmer. At least, out of the people we've interviewed. There are others we haven't interviewed that I would have liked to see get a look as well.

not making a thread cause I don't know how reliable the info is but several Bengal fans are talking as if Zimmer WILL be Miami's next coach.

Well given our front offices's mo or even hell average nfl mo he is probably leading canidate outside of Fisher because Ireland has worked with him in Dallas. Definately the best of recent Dallas assistants

The signs that Zimmer has shown that make me think he will be a good to very good head coach:

1. He is a tremendous leader and motivator. His players are willing to run through a brick wall for him. They love playing for him.
2. He does a great job of putting his players into positions where they can succeed. His has fielded two top 10 defenses over the past three seasons, and look at the talent on his defensive roster. They do not have a bunch of great players on defense. They are productive with guys like Frostee Rucker, Domata Peko, Justin Fanene, Chris Crocker, Pac Man Jones, Manny Lawson, Thomas Howard, Reggie Nelson, and Nate Clements. The only really good players on their defense are Geno Atkins, Rey Maulagua, and Leon Hall, and Maulauga is overrated.
3. He has shown the ability to adapt. He's run both forty and thirty fronts in his career.

The guy has the potential to be a heck of a coach.

Peko's actually a decent DT and remember Leon Hall missed the last bit of the season.

I thought the same thing too. But with the tragedy that has happened to the Philbin family, do the dolphins offer him the job or not?
IF Fisher goes to the Rams, which I still expect, is Zimmer the frontrunner? I would have guessed Philbin, but I am not sure what to think after the family situation recently. Talk about tough to approach in terms of the Dolphins.

I wish the Philbin family well.

Interesting, I wonder where they are hearing that from. I think he's got a really good shot at it if Fisher takes the St. Louis job. I know my Bengals friends really don't want to lose Zimmer to us.

What's the point ? Our offense is just fine, we just need a quarterback. Our defense needs work on closing out games.

I think head coach is more of an administrator/motivator than a coach on one or the other side of the ball. While coaches like Bellecheat may directly contribute most have coordinators to manage and make adjustments. I think this was Sparano's undoing, whoever responsible not making critical and successful adjustments coming out of halftime

NRA, I admit I'm curious about who you would like to see us hire?
