Dolphins | Culpepper needs to change ways to stay on the field
Sun, 24 Sep 2006 08:39:16 -0700
ESPN's Chris Mortensen reports Miami Dolphins QB Daunte Culpepper will need to change the way he's been playing in order to stay on the field. Head coach Nick Saban told Culpepper he needs to get rid of the ball faster in order to be successful. The team brought in QB Joey Harrington over the offseason as insurance in case Culpepper was not ready to return.

I feel like i've the only one who's ever seen Joey Harrington play around here. You talk about lost? The guy was TERRIBLE in Detroit. His weapons may have been over rated, but i've never seen a guy look so dazed in his life. He looks like Eric Lindros after concussion 7 when he drops back. Like a deer in the head lights. How can people want this guy in?

That's the most encouraging thing I've heard since we traded a 2nd rounder for this bum back in the Spring. Sadly, I think he'll coast to a good performance against that woeful Titans defense. Then we can enjoy him blowing chunks for the rest of the season against real competition.

thing is , Eric Lindros could produce. He is only behind Mario and Gretzky for 3rd all time in career average points per game with 1.35 .

Trying to be positive as possible while maintaing realism here instead of getting into a 'Daunte is a fraud or sucks' tirade there is a point. Daunte is holding on to the ball due to indecision and IMHO his footwork and mobility is not where he needs to be due to residual affects of the injury. He just seems unsure and this mental affect of the injury has quit a bit to do with the fact he just is not 100%. Question here; is a not quit 100% Daunte better than a healthy Joey H? Obviously at this point this coaching staff thinks so.

These things can be fixed. Culpepper has got to read the d and scan the field quickly. Its not that he is a terrible decision maker but that he is slow to react. For him to be our true franchise qb he must cross this barrier. Its not just coaching but mental toughness on the part of Culpepper that needs to rise to the occasion. So, yes there are issues but, opportunities to fix them so that Daunte can get back to his pre-2005 self.

Yeah, pal, for longer than you have been walking this earth.

I don't have a tolerance for fixable mediocrity when it comes to my team - why do you?

However, if DC is making stupid decisions that is making us lose games, what choice do you have.
BTW, I've gone on record as saying this over and over again. You can't write Harrington off after his stint with the most dysfunctional franchise in the league.
Steve Young and Jim Plunkett were highly regarded draft picks who were very unpopular with their original teams. Both flourished after being traded to winning organizations. Food for thought.

You hate Culpepper, we get it. You can stop whining about it now, because we're married to him whether you like it or not.

Obviously the coaching staff made a blunder starting Daunte in Week1, most likely in response to a push from the Dolphin marketing office. The Organization decided before this season that C-Pepp is to be promoted as "the savior" and "best QB since Marino" etc, to hopefully sell tickets. Then they had the story of "amazing recovery" - everything was riding on the speeding locomotive of HYPE.

There was also the issue of Harrington still learning the Offense, and a hope that Daunte would be further along in the System. So a decision was made - now they're living with the fallout. TOO LATE to go back now - Daunte is the starter and you don't just bench the #1 QB after two games.

We'll see this season if the failure to start Harrington in Week1 will be seen as a deciding factor in the team's overall record.
