Dolphins cutting Kyle Van Noy is team either playing checkers (bad) or chess (exciting)

The article is based on the premise that Van Noy, "performed at basically the same level he had in the past." I'm not sure I agree with that. Maybe my memory is mistaken but I feel like he had a fairly even number of good plays and bad. I remember some sacks but then I remember him being a liability in coverage and even run support a few times I think. Idk. Either way, while my immediate reaction was surprise, it also wasn't 'oh no how can we replace him.' And as others have said, it's hard to not trust Flores with the defense after the significant turn around this season.

There is soo many factors. 1) Nobody could have predicted the pandemic and the salary cap going down. This could have taken 15-20 million dollars in cap space Miami expected to have for their long term vision for this offseason. 2) Miami also most likely didn’t expect Andrew Van Ginkel to play as well as he did, which earned him a bigger role in year 3, which means less time for Van Noy, which means his value is not quite as important.
3) Miami may want to add a coverage line backer since we already have multiple guys who can set the edge, and blitz, we really don’t have any true coverage specialist LB which hurt us at times. I saw Miami has interest in Lavonte David maybe they feel like they can swap KVN for David for a minimal amount of extra money and get a MLB who better fits that unit.
