We were all feeling pretty good about our D in the first 10 games but, then all Hell broke loose. In the last 6 games, aside fro Jets#1, we gave up 182 points in 5 game, a hard to believe 36 point average. vs Denver, Balt, NE, Minny, and Jets #2. What happened?

How much was on Coyle?

How much was on injury?

How much was on players not playing?

IMO there is no excuse. Blame everyone. Coyle for not putting players in positions to succeed. Players for not executing, and for the next man up not performing to expectations.

It doesn't matter what the excuses is when the result is the same.

Excuses are for losers.

I wouldn't be surprised if we heard some unreported injury information down the road. Odrick, Starks, Mitchell, Wake, Vernon, Shelby aren't just stout for 10 games then abused for 6 games for absolutely no reason. I don't care what coyle did, I have no answer for why our d-line suddenly started to get their a$$e$ handed to them.

It's not called excuses, Sir. It's called evaluating the situation and determining what you need to do to correct the situation for next season.

It all started with that Broncos game. Some players (anonymously) expressed a lot of concern after the game. Cant find the article but the team lost a lot of confidence in Coyle after that game apparently.

They were playing on borrowed time. Nov and Dec their is plenty of tape on a teams personnel. Miami lb corp was a joke. And once good teams were able to disect and digest what the defensive personnel was, it was over.

That's a very fair point. You can see a few falling off but, that many is very hard to explain. They all could not have forgotten how to play. The injury reports are a joke.

Whole lot easier to dissect with a starting CB coming off the streets and should not have even been the 4th option, which he was.

CB while crucial, doesn't account for multiple 200 yard rushing games. Denver...seriously?

The Cardinals gave up 31 a game and close to 1000 yards in their two most important games at the end of the season, what happened there?

What does that have to do with the Dolphins or what the thread creator was asking?

If you look at those 5 games in detail you will see that the majority of points allowed come in one quarter of each game.
Denver 22 points in 4th, Baltimore 14 points in 4th, New England 24 points in 3rd, Minn 18 points in 4th and finally Jets 23 points over 3rd and 4th.
Other than those quarters the defense was certainly acceptable. So we need to dig into what happened in those quarters and leading up to them.

In the Denver game the Miami offense came out on fire and scored 21 points in the 1st half and scored TD's on 3 of their 4 possessions in the half. After halftime the offense did nothing. They gained a total of 57 yards on their next 4 possessions. One of those drives resulted in a TD due special teams recovering a fumble 12 yards from Broncos end zone. Even with the short field we almost screwed that up. On the first play RT almost threw a pick 6 on a bubble screen, then on 3rd down he did throw an interception. A defensive holding call negated the turnover and we got another try from the 7. that was one of the ugliest scoring drives I have ever seen. But they did get 7 to give us an 11 point lead. But then on the next 2 drives nothing and a game sealing interception that accounted for the last 7 of the 22 points.

In the Baltimore game it was more of the same. 10 points scored on the 1st 2 drives of the game and then nothing. 5 straight drives on offense where we only gained 72 total yards. Then defense/special teams team up to provide great field position to offense. This gives the offense a chance to take the lead but they settle for a FG at the end of the 3rd. That was the back breaker. even though we were still in a close game it was evident we would not score another TD on the Ravens. this had to deflate the defense. They did give up a TD drive to start the 4th and we were still in the game trailing by 8. The exact same position Green bay was in this past weekend. What did Green bay do? they drove for a TD keep them self in the game. What did we do? We went 3 and out and turned it right back to our defense which gave up another TD.

In the NE game more of the same, We score 13 points in the 1st half and are basically moving the ball at will but failing to capitalize. We give up TD to start the 3rd and are in that same position of behind by 8 and needing a drive on offense to keep us in the game. What did we do? we go 3 and out on offense and let them take a more than 2 score lead. In that second half in Foxboro our offense put up 106 yards on 5 possessions and most of them were in the last 2 drives when the game was decided and the patriots were exchanging yards for time.

The Minnesota game was the outlier. The offense did NOT go dormant in the second half like the previous 3 games. The offense kept scoring and moving the ball but the defense just couldn't stop the Minnesota offense.

The final Jet game was much like the 1st 3. We moved the ball in the 1st half and scored 17 points. On our 1st offensive play of second half we had a 97 yard TD run to take us to 24. But then after that the offense gained just over a 100 yards and scored no points in the next 6 possessions of the second half.

The common theme in 4 of these 5 games is an offense that scores early but then shuts down when the game is on the line. Football is a complimentary game and when you rely on one unit to carry the team for an entire half (especially second half) you are going to have problems. JMO.

i've already explained 100 times miamis issues on the d and how once teams figured them out and got us in those personnel it was curtains...so fellas figure it out for yourselves
