Hey, glad to see your guys' site is still alive.

Question for you guys. The Eagles will need a DB coach next year as Harbaugh was named the Ravens head coach and their other DB coach(Trent Walters) may retire. Thinking of possible replacements(Eagles will probably give Otis Smith one of the jobs) from coaching staffs that were dismissed, it seems to me that despite your guys poor record that your DB coach did a pretty good job in the mist of a lot of injuries. Jason Allen's play improved, Will Allen all of a sudden got good again. Is my impression correct? Who was your DB coach last year? I can't find it on your official site. Is he still under contract with the Dolphins or did they officially fire all the assistants when Cameron was fired? Is Parcells/Sparano interested in retaining him for next year? Thanks.

Our DB Coach was Mel Phillips who was the DB Coach for the Dolphins way back when Don Shula was still our Head Coach. Phillips is a class act and darn good coach imo. I wonder if he will retire though instead of moving to another team. And yes Phillips was released with all of the assistants except for the linebackers and special teams asst. coach

i liked this guy...imo he did a great job because the secondary was solid despite all the injuries...

i hope sparano signs phillips again because they said they will look at the assistants from last year too...phillips is in the league for a long time now and i think our DBs can learn alot from his experience...

I hate to see him go but at the same time our secondary was not solid at all. Teams didn't pass on us much because they could run it down our throat all year.

Here's the scoop. Mel Phillips is practically a Dolphins legend. Has survived many coaching changes, from Shula, to Jimmy, to Wannstedt to Saban and then Cameron. In the past, we had a dominant secondary, but averaged 2-3 Pro Bowlers playing back there. When we lost Surtain and Madison, the secondary really regressed. Under Saban, who himself is considered a DBs guru, he made some pretty signifcant changes in the way he wanted the DBs to play, everything from footwork, to the jam at the line of scrimmage. Phillips' role was really reduced under Saban. Then, under Cameron, we brought in a younger DBs coach to work with the safeties, Brett Maxie. I imagine Mel made it known he wouldnt be around much longer, and they wanted him to help tutor his eventual replacement. I have a feeling he will retire.

But about our DBs, we were decimated with injuries, but the stats are somewhat misleading, as teams ran with ease against our D. Not a reflection on Mel, however, who is a darn good coach.

Hope this helps.

ya, we saw him get swept under the rug with Saban and he never really recovered from that. our secondary was just stepped on all year, and of course it's never anyones fault when injuries occur, i don't think anyone couldve prepared for the injured list we had goin this year. it's a shame but i think if he retires he can still keep his pride.

Having been here when we drafted Troy Vincent, Sam Madison, and Patrick Surtain.... I would guess that we had a pro-bowl corner for most of Mel Philips career. If I were guessing, Maybe 13 probowl corners in 17 years. Maybe 5 pro-bowl alternates. Part of that is luck, but part of that is because Philips was very good.

I'm curious to see who will be on our new staff. My guess, is a lot of former cowboys.
