Dolphins defensive end Cam Wake knows the left side of the defense is stacked. Among himself, tackle Ndamukong Suh and cornerback Brent Grimes the Dolphins have 11 Pro Bowl appearances and three of the NFL’s best players at their positions.
They’re so good they could essentially shut down one side of the field, which is what they’ve done so far in training camp.Regardless, Wake doesn’t want to discourage opposing offenses from testing them.
“No, they have to run left every single time, throw left every single time,” he said. “Please quote that, pass it on to all the (offensive) coordinators in the rest of the league.” Suh is a brick wall. It’s incredibly tough to run against him. Wake has an unstoppable motor, which is why he’s such a relentless pass rusher. And Grimes is incredibly athletic and instinctive, traits that allow him to intercept or defend passes others couldn’t touch.
It’s the perfect storm.
So far the Dolphins have kept Suh and Wake side-by-side to form an imposing duo for offenses and they’ve fit together seamlessly. They combined for 20 sacks last season – Wake had 11.5, Suh had 8.5 –and both were selected for their fourth Pro Bowl. Behind them is Grimes, one of the league’s best coverage cornerbacks. He had five interceptions last season. He was selected for his third Pro Bowl.
Together that trio might form the strongest defensive left side in the NFL.
