Dolphins defensive end Olivier Vernon experienced the NFL equivalent of a growth spurt last season. After posting just 3.5 sacks as a rookie fourth-round pick in 2012, Vernon had a team-best 11.5 sacks last year.

"He's got a chance to develop into a dynamic player," defensive coordinator Kevin Coyle said.
Still, Vernon works in relative anonymity.
When most people talk about Dolphins defensive ends the focus is on Cam Wake, the three-time Pro Bowl selection, and then it drifts over to Dion Jordan, the No. 3 pick of the draft in 2013.
After those two have been analyzed, then the chatter eventually gets around to Vernon.
"It is what it is," said Vernon, the former University of Miami standout. "My play is going to speak for itself. That's all that matters."

I love the quote. "It is what it is. My play is going to speak for itself. That's all that matters."

You can never have enough pass rushers in todays NFL.

I thought he already did? Double digit sacks tend to do that. But if he can replicate or even improve those numbers he is definitely for real. Vernon and jordan should have chances. I know its a pipe dream but have 3 players on the same team ever broke 10 sacks the same year?

Gonna be great to watch the competition and play of our 3 man DE rotation. OV has to take the next step to be a really good DE in the rush as well as run. People need to somewhat discount only the sacks. I do like OV but, he was no where near Wake as a pass rusher, and a few of his sacks were because of what Wake did on the other side

To evaluate a pass rusher, you need to add in QB hits and hurries to the sacks. OV had 11 sacks but only 5 hits and 32 hurries on 531 pass rushes, along with how many times he gets blocked or beats his man.

Wake had 10 sacks, 20 hits, and 41 hurries on 416 rushes.

Jordan had 2 sacks, 4 hits, and 18 hurries on 206 tries.

NOT, in any way, diminishing how Vernon improved, just looking at the overall picture.

What makes this Miami defense fun (on paper at least) is that on top of the talented pass-rushing DEs Miami has, their DTs can also bring big pressure from the middle, the LBs (Especially Wheeler of all people) are effective blitzing the QB, and Miami also has DBs that can get the QB if asked.

Some people seem to continue to make excuses why Vernon had 11 sacks last year other then being a good player, but if he has another good year in 2014, people are going to have to admit he is for real.

His rookie year he hardly played, yet against the Jets he had one of the most dominating games any player on defense and special teams were able to put up all year. I believe Vernon will be a very dominant player in his career.

I hope OV can continue to have double digit sacks and would like to see Cam Wake put up enough to be the sack leader. I think they have the potential to do that. As nick1 said, having 3 in double digits would be dream, but if OV is in double digits and Wake is leading the league you can bet the rest of the D will be having success because of this. I'm glad OV isn't self praising and is focused on being consistent and having people recognize that he has talent.

Hell yea, we had a Dynamic Duo bringing pressure from the inside. Odrick had 6 sacks, 13 hits, and 28 hurries on 511 tries, and Starks had 4- 6- and 30 on 404. Let's not forget Shelby who chimed in with 3- 3- and 7 on 190 tries, while being far and away our best DE vs the run, and I expect Mitchell to fit right in.

I do not know of any team in the NFL with this much talent and depth.

If this defense could put it together while reaching their talent level, and the offense finally play that fast high tempo offense that has been advertised since Philbin got here, this Dolphins team could make us all need serious surgery after February from the permanent smile on our face.

Hate to keep boring posters with stats but. last year, as a team, we had 46 sacks, 69 hits, and 216 hurries. Combining the individual play ranked us #4 in the NFL on pass rush behind Seattle, Rams, and Tenn. I can see that getting better to #1 with everyone healthy.

Side note- I looked up Mitchell who had 4 sacks, 3 hits, and 9 hurries on 227 tries, while playing mostly NT.

I think the pass rush will be superb this year. Onlything that worries me is that I believe Bills & Jets will be run heavy

True. We have to get up on both teams by 10 to 14 points so that they panic and start throwing more.

If not, it could get ugly unless Wheeler and Ellerbe miraculously have a better year.

They should be both have good RBS and suspect QBs. Misi better be ready at mike

Wow, yeah if vernon and Jordan both turn out to be good to great our front 7 will be like Seattles! Wake, Odrick/Mitchell, Starks, Vernon/ Jordan? Awesome! If Koa misi turns out to be good at MLB we will be lookin pretty damn good.
