Dolphins defense trying to change ... but not to 3-4

Even when Ireland drafted for the 3-4 he drafted players that didn't fit. Philip Merling...that was a head scratcher. Odrick was always more of a natural fit as a DT in the 4-3. If Spitler was drafted purely for special teams then OK but if he ever though Spitler could be a backup linebacker in the 3-4 then he was wrong again. Merling (pick #32) and Odrick (pick #28) were both technically 1st round picks (Merling in a year there were officially only 31 picks because of a forfeited pick by New Orleans). Really, outside of Reshad Jones (who better get his act together) what better than average player did the guy even draft on defense?

I'm not saying the guy drafted well, Ive always been critical of the drafts, I'm just saying his background was 3-4 versus Hickey's history of scouting for a 4-3.

And I'd argue that Reshad Jones isnt better than average but that's another thread....

The only people that have whined (ad nauseam IMO) about Dion's position are here on FH. I have not heard 1 peep from Coyle or Joe.

Agreed.

What about the play where DJ95 lined up @ DT against the stealers then proceeded to drop into coverage & blew up a dump off pass?

Exactly, from what we have heard in the past everyone on the coaching staff wanted him and considered it a coup when they only had to trade a 2nd round pick to move up to #3. (Dammit I just gave Ireland credit for something). In his limited role, he was able to get pressures last year and the staff was also able to move him around in different formations. I just think as a rookie this coaching staff didn't want him to do to much. Do I agree with their philosophy of bringing most rookies along slowly, no. Do I think Jordan's shoulder had something to do with it, maybe? Do I think we should wait to call him a bust until after we can see what he can do with a full and healthy offseason, absolutely.

On a second note, he is able to take away Tom Brady's #1 weapon, in Gronk, on offense. They always say you draft players to beat those teams in your division and Jordan definitely helps with that. I can't wait to see him blanket Gronk this season.

Jordan has all the tools to be Jason Taylor'esque.. Who was also a "tweener" of sorts.. Worked great here, eh?

Was Taylor better as a 3 4 OLB? The stats say he was, but look how long he was great at 4 3 DE. Jordan isn't a missed pick, he just needs to learn his role. He'll get it down eventually.

JT played DE in a 4-3 at Akron on every defensive snap. He never lined up at linebacker like Jordan did at Oregon, he never covered slot receivers like Jordan did...Taylor was a straight up 4-3 DE. That's why he was drafted in the 3rd round. No one knew he had the athleticism to play LB. Taylor also played with more leverage, strength and better hand placement than Jordan. I remember watching Taylor bull rush a LT who out weighed him by 60 lbs. I've never seen Jordan do that...at least not yet. Taylor would come into the season at 265 lbs and by the end of the season he'd be 245 lbs and still he showed more functional strength than Jordan ever has (including all the games I've seen of him at Oregon).

Just because both of then are tall and lean doesn't mean they're the same player. Taylor was a football player who was physical and athletic. Jordan is an athlete trying to play football using finesse.

.

I believe the injury kept him out of the weight room and with another training camp and time to muscle up a bit I think he'll be fine.

Yes indeed

Like I haven't been saying Vernon is a tweener and would fit better as a 3-4 OLB :rolleyes2:

Just like the offense the defense is a mixed bag of players that don't all fit the scheme the coaches want to run. Not a shock to those of us that thought Ireland was an idiot.

A tweener that had 11.5 sacks lining up at DE and should have made the PB over Wake. Not sure why anyone would want to move him as he proved that he can play DE.

I don't need Coyle or Joe to tell me they're whining....the fact that Jordan can't get playing time tells me they are whining....

God I wish we would switch back. So bad. But Soliai is gone so there's no chance. Jordan would be so much better in a 34. It could be troublesome playing OV and Wake too but I could see it happening regardless of where each is at in some sets.

Lol @ armando thinking he created the idea of changing back

JT bullrush a LT in his rookie year? Because that is the only year you can compare the 2 in the pros so far.... College ball is not even relevant. Totally different game.

I don't think I see where I said they are the same player.. I said he has the tools to become like him. I even think he's more athletic than JT, but I don't know if he will be better.

Your description of Ireland is poetry to my soul. Thumbs up and thank you.

Has anybody noticed how Joe Rose is now finally telling us what he really feels about Ireland. Being a team employee makes a real difference to an announcer's public statements [see the Phinsiders for another example of blatant Pro-Dolphins spin].

If Croyle is hellbent on running a 4-3 he needs to get as value for the 3-4 players on the roster.

Just going to chime in and say that our defense last year was overall very good so when the blurb from that article just harps on HOW BAD our defense was, I lost all interest in the writers credibility.

Anyone who actually *watched the games* saw our defense perform average to excellent in all but 2-3 games (despite our offense consistently putting them in position to fail).

It seems like Ireland got too fixated on the physical performance metrics of certain players rather than their actual performance in games. Dion Jordan remains a work in progress with freaky physical potential, but we need to see more from him this year. I don't understand the expensive acquisition of Philip Wheeler. One of the worst recruiting decisions I've seen and Finheaven members were projecting a possible disaster from the moment he was signed. Wheeler's Agent totally exploited the team by offering the low payment year 1 and the guaranteed balloon in year 2. I understand the logic but if the player isn't even good enough to be on the team, a total disaster. Wheeler was a known product with many years at Indy before his good season on a bad Raiders team. Southbeach2 remains optimistic that Wheeler will improve significantly this year. We live in hope. There is a real possibility that Hickey will draft the LB who is athletic and a good tackler. I don't have any faith in converting Koa Misi to a middle linebacker, but maybe I'm wrong. He is very competitive.
If Ireland is wondering why he lost his job, he just needs to remember the total stupidity of the Wheeler acquisition. Ireland was consistently bad at drafting and recruiting Linebackers. In contrast, he was actually quite decent at drafting DBs, where we got good value from many late round picks.
