hey guys,
i've just come across a very interesting fact about our defense. true, we were struggling badly all season, but there's reason to hope nonetheless.

i don't think i have to say anything about our run defense. we were ranked at the bottom of the league (sorry, don't know the exact ranking). we made moves by acquiring Ferguson, bringing in Starks, Torbor and Anderson with hopes to fix that unit.

now, as for our pass defense, things aren't looking as bleak as advertised. certainly, we only racked up 30 sacks all year long. but there's reason to hope. we were actually ranked 8th in the NFL in Adjusted Sack Rate.

so, we recorded a sack on 7.3 % of our opponents' pass attempts. Baltimore led the league at 8.8%. the league average was 6.4 % btw

we definitely have some fixing to do, but that's something to build on IMO.

Remember though, that our run defense was so poor last year, that passing defense stats will be slightly skewed. Don't let that fool you.

That being said ... our defense had improved already with the current FA signings. Maybe not siginificantly, but most definately improved. [Remember, ZT didn't play a good portion of the season - so it was essentially played without him anyway]

What you are trying to say is, we have the capability of being really good this year and we will/may win 12-13 games and SB 43!!!

THe defensive stats are very misleading. Our run defense was so bad, and our offense so woeful that tems had no need to pass against us at all. That's why we finished ranking highly in pass defense. And sacks do not tell the story of a pass rush. Our pass rush was non-existent. What's much more telling is that we had very few QB hurries and knockdowns. Those are the keys to disrupting an opponent's passing game.

Stats are horrible in football.

One of the best pass defenses . . . only because we had the worst run defenses.

Just like many teams who are bad end up having messed up pass to run ratios because they are always behind and have to pass to catch up. (Of course the Patriots are the exception to this rule, because they pass up 40).

The D was HORRIBLE last year, plain and simple . . . and I fully blame the coaches . . . its unacceptable to have the talent we had on this D last year (old or not) and play that bad . . . and things needed to change, and I'm glad that they are.

easy guys. i didn't say anywhere that our pass defense is good. nice attempt of putting words in my mouth, but that's not what i said.

I think by upgrading to focus on the pass rush/ run stop (a la Jason Ferguson, Randy Starks, Charlie Anderson, Reggie Torbor... developing Quentin Moses, Paul Solai, and Rod Wright) we do not need a stellar/ shutdown corner. We definately need an upgrade by signing one more above average CB and a couple of quality Safeties, but with a beastly pass rush and an improvement in stopping the run, our defense should be back on track and near the top 10 in the league.
