It's Only Happened ONCE!
1. The Dolphins have made 212 trades involving draft picks through the years, including picks that were relinquished or acquired as compensation for the signing of players or coaches. The last trade involving draft picks came this March when the Dolphins acquired LB Kiko Alonso and CB Byron Maxwell from the Philadelphia Eagles for a swap of positions in the first round. The first came in 1966 when the Dolphins acquired QB George Wilson Jr. from Buffalo for a 13th-round pick in the 1967 draft.
2. The most trades the Dolphins made in a calendar year involving draft picks was nine, which they did in both 1999 and 2004.
3. The Dolphins have acquired three veterans for first-round picks through the years — WR Paul Warfield in 1970, RB Delvin Williams in 1978 and RB Ricky Williams in 2002. The Dolphins also were required in 1970 to give the Baltimore Colts a first-round pick in 1971 as compensation for hiring Don Shula as head coach.
4. The largest number of draft picks involved in a single Dolphins trade was six. It happened twice. In 1996, they acquired a third-round pick, two fourth-round selections and a fifth-round choice from Jacksonville for picks in the second and fourth rounds. In 2010, they traded their first-round selection (the 12th overall) to the San Diego Chargers along with picks in the fourth and sixth rounds for the 28th overall selection and picks in the second and fourth rounds, as well as linebacker Tim Dobbins.
5. The Dolphins have traded three players for first-round picks through the years — QB John Stofa in 1967, QB Joe Theismann (who had been playing in the CFL) in 1974, and WR Randal Hill in 1991. Stofa, who was traded to Cincinnati for first- and second-round picks in the 1968 draft, rejoined the Dolphins in 1970 after being waived by the Bengals and was traded again in 1971, this time to Denver for a seventh-round pick in the 1972 draft.
