I really like our QB situation, now. It's clearly better than at any time since probably 1994 or so (Dan's last really solid season). Let me start from #3 to #1.

#3 - we will have a good TC competition between Cleo Lemon, Brock Berlin and Justin Holland. From all that I've read, Holland is a young guy with a lot of potential - at least as far as throwing. If he shows the mental and psychological abilities to handle the NFL game, he would be a solid #3 for us. Obviously, Saban has some belief in Lemon, but I'm not sure what to think of him. He does have some athleticism. Nevertheless, we have a good group at #3 from which to choose.

#2 - Harrington is not a great QB. But, a few things are clear: a) he was under a lot of pressure in Detroit that he will not feel here; b) he had perhaps the worst organization in the entire league above him; c) injuries to his WR's hurt; d) he is better than any QB the Dolphins have had in the interim between Marino and Culpepper. I'd rather have Harrington at backup than any other QB starter we've had since Dan retired; e) he's still only 27, so he's really not even at the age where a lot of QB's come into their own. For a 6th round pick, I think he'll be an excellent acquisition; f) finally, the coaching here will be a better situation than he's had since he came into the league. With all that, I've never felt so good about QB since Dan was here.

#1 - Culpepper - now that Harrington is in the fold, we can be more cautious with Culpepper. I'm all for giving him time even if his progress is great and even if he "seems" ready at the start of the season. I'd like to give him 4-5 weeks at least. Maybe even wait until the bye week, before starting him. Not that Harrington is going to be all-world. But, he will be better than Gus, imo. As to the Culpepper recovery, I remember a slew of glowing reports about how well McGahee was progressing and yet he really wasn't truly 100% until his 2nd year (about 1 yr & 8 months after the injury). Obviously, Culpepper is not going to have to have the same abilities that McGahee requires at RB, but his instincts will push him to run a lot and that could cause trouble if he reinjures himself or if he's not fully recovered.

A couple of asides:

If we can continue to shore up some other spots - namely, OLB and a #2 RB, this may be the most complete team the Dolphins have had in many years.

I'd still like to see the Moore trade go off to NO and I'd love to see us somehow acquire Bennett. Perhaps we could trade or #7 and Travis Minor. Bennett would be great at 8-10 carries a game, with pass catching abilities, familiarity with the offense (from his Linehan days in Minn) and game breaking speed.

Yes, I agree with you, it also would have been incredible to pick Arrington, but thats past story which I dont want to go back..., by the OLB solution, we could pick Ahmad Brooks in the supplemental, by the #2 RB problem as you said, Bennett would be an upgrade or wait to see what K.J. can do for us...,

Im also a little, not a lot concered about DB's, I know its Saban's speciality and that he has done a great job, but we still need a NAME in case that Jason Allen is not the solution and Will Poole is not 100% healthy adding to this newbies DB's the lack of experience Travis Daniels could just not work for our secondary (this season), so I was thinking in getting Ty Law, if he comes cheap, if not, we'll have to prey that the lack of experience dont bother us...

anything has to be better than what we had before that.

Yes, I aslo agree with that, we are seeking to have the most complete team in just one year after Saban took da power, I mean, he is not a magician, he have a great mind and he is a great coach, but we have to give him TIME!!!

GO FINS!!! :dolphins:

Reggie Howard gone solved 50% of our touchdown problems last year...

We are in the right path...

I think Sammie will do good for us. Lets not forget what he did in '04. Saban has been saying some good things about KJ, so if KJ can handle Special teams than he is our 3rd string. I know that Minor is the Jeff Zgonia of the offense(Everyone says he will be cut but he keeps appearing) but Minor is not a good RB. Its his ST play that has him here.

Will Allen is a huge pick up. His biggest issue was interceptions. I dont care if he doesnt have 1 in all his years here. He has led the league in pass deflections and that is all we need. We do not need a superstar. Just do what you are assigned to do and i guarantee Allen was not brought here to intercept.

We have playmaker LBs already. We do not need every LB spot to be a superstar. Marginal/role players can do just fine and OLB is one of ours where a marginal player is designated.

I think we are really really close to a full Saban team. Next year i think it will be complete but I still think we can make a nice run this year.

Yes, but count that guy as a BACKUP...

I agree with you but right now Harrington is our only option as a backup.

Yes, but count that guy as a BACKUP...

you think those numbers yell starter??

he was a starter and got his chance. but failed BIG TIME!!

we signed him as a backup, and thats all ANY TEAM had
any interest in for him.

he was traded for the pic because saban knows duante
will not start, and will be in and out during the season.

then back to the bench.

FEELY was aquired to challenge for the starting job. he
got his chance and what happened, he failed BIG TIME
also!

to many pics, not enough td's. and he had a big arm and
lots of potential. move around good. but to many pics.

sound familiar?

i don't care if your 9th string, above all else, you don't
want a guy who has a penchant for throwing pics. so
i just don't get the joey thing.

and i hope cleo gets a real shot!

i think harrington will do okay here till culpepper heals the only thing that concerns me is adding a solid olb donnie sprangton may be ok but getting a big name from the supplimental draft would give us the best run defence in the league i bet, im a little concerned with our secondary, right now were a little above avarage at athletic ability but way beind in expeience, ty law would be good if the price is right
maybe since hes getting old he could be a saftey for us w/ allen and then will allen and daniels can be our corners, then id be comeratable with our secondary

Is anyone seriously saying they'd rather have Feeley or Fiedler or Gus rather than Harrington?

Sure, Harrington had equal picks to TD's. But, that was with Detroit, not with Saban and Co.

And, he's a backup, not a starter, except at the beginning.

Yet, if you know about NFL history - there are a slew of QB's (Rich Gannon, Steve Young, etc.) who had very mediocre to bad stats early on in their careers and then, when given a fresh start and having time to mature, they were much better.

I'm not saying Harrington will be as good as those guys. But, the point is, as he matures, learns under a stable system, he will be much improved.

Given that it's the Dolphins and not Detroit, Harrington won't have the pressure to go out and carry the team on his shoulders. Gus didn't do that at all last year.

It's not that Harrington is great. But, as a backup he's a better QB than any starter we've had since Marino's retirement.

As far as secondary - I'm not that concerned. They may take some time, but they will gel into a solid unit.

At CB:

- Travis Daniels was a solid surprise and he'll be much better this year.
- We've added Will Allen and Andre Goodman. Allen should start at the other corner.
- Will Poole is a very good player who has not had the opportunity at a real shot. He'll improve the nickel/dime spots.

At S:
- We have solid depth with Hill, Tillman, Cooper, Bell, and Shabazz. We will have a decent starter from one of these five.
- Jason Allen will start and be a solid safety for us.

I'm not that concerned about the secondary as a result.
