The Dolphins have released their first depth chart of the 2014 season and there are few, if any, surprises included.
The release of the first depth chart always coincides with the first preseason game, which this year will be at Atlanta on Friday night. Head Coach Joe Philbin said last week that competition is ongoing and no spots have been decided, but the release of the first depth chart still always attracts attention.
Right tackle Ja’Wuan James is the only rookie listed as a first-team player, with wide receiver Jarvis Landry and right guard Billy Turner both listed on the second team.
Because of all the different combinations that have been used so far in training camp, there was some uncertainty as to how the offensive line would be presented, but the first depth chart has the first group as Branden Albert at left tackle, Daryn Colledge at left guard, Mike Pouncey at center, Dallas Thomas at right guard and James.
Pouncey, of course, has been on the physically unable to perform list since the start of camp and he’s expected to miss the first few weeks of the regular season after undergoing hip surgery in June. With that in mind, it was interesting to note that Sam Brenner was listed as the second-team center, with Samson Satele on the third team. Satele, who started every game at center for the Dolphins in 2007 and 2008, rejoined the team Saturday and took part in his first practice Monday.
The rest of the first team on offense featured all returning starters: Ryan Tannehill at quarterback; Lamar Miller at running back; Charles Clay at tight end: and Mike Wallace, Brian Hartline and Brandon Gibson at wide receiver.
