DAVIE—
A.J. Edds is exhausted. It's hot. His body aches, and his brain is fried. But at the conclusion of Sunday's scrimmage there's a smile on his face that nearly goes from ear to ear.
And it's there for good reason.
Exactly a year ago the Miami Dolphins' 2010 fourth-round pick was in the dumps after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during the first week of training camp. This time around he survived.
"It's the small victories in life that count, and this is one of them," Edds said, referring to the healthy conclusion of week one.
Jared Odrick, the Dolphins' 2010 first-round pick, was fortunate enough to make it through camp last year, and actually earned a starting spot. But the former Penn State standout suffered a serious leg injury in the season opener against Buffalo, then broke his foot the week he returned to practice months later.
"It was just a string of bad luck, nothing else," Odrick said.
The injuries Odrick and Edds suffered stripped the Dolphins of two key defenders the team was banking on last season. Their return this year has the organization excited, feeling like the Dolphins' defense entered a bonus round.
