Dolphins GM meets with linebacker Ahmad Brooks

The Dolphins have taken an interest in former University of Virginia linebacker Ahmad Brooks, who is considered by many the top player available in the NFL's supplemental draft on July 13.
Dolphins general manager Randy Mueller and director of college scouting Ron Labadie were among those who attended Brooks' workout Thursday.
Mueller and Labadie met with Brooks after the workout.
In addition, the Dolphins sent Brooks to Michigan last week to meet with Lon Rosen, a psychologist and longtime friend of Dolphins coach Nick Saban, agent Greg Williams said Friday.
Rosen does character research on players for Saban.
Williams also said he presented information to scouts, coaches and executives in attendance, showing that Brooks has passed drug tests taken on a regular basis over the past two months. Williams acknowledged that Brooks had ''issues'' with drug use during college.
Brooks was arrested in March 2003 on a marijuana possession charge.
According to two sources, Brooks failed multiple drug tests for marijuana use during college.
That led to the school's dismissal of him from the team this winter.
''Ahmad knows that he has to make good decisions in the future and change the people he hangs out with if he's going to take advantage of the athletic talent he has,'' Williams said. ``He's a good kid who wants to get this turned around and be an example to kids about how someone can change for the better.''
Brooks weighed 260 pounds, down approximately 30 pounds from two months ago. The weight issue is another question for NFL teams.
Brooks was considered one of the top high school players in Virginia history before going to college.
Some scouts have said he has the talent to be a first-round pick.
However, the off-field issues could drop Brooks into the fourth or fifth round of the supplemental draft.

Wow. He weighed 290 at the LB position? Or was that just him gaining weight from the munchies?

Well if we do decide to pick him up than I hope he does well.

Brooks really wood be a perfect fit as a true rush linebacker. I would be doing cartwheels if we could get him in the fourth round.

Good news!!!!:dolphins:

Good news? Let's see, a history of drug use and problems maintaining weight. That all points to lack of discipline and mental weakness.
Just what you want when you are trying to build a championship team

That's why he's in the supplemental draft and why he won't go in the first round. They're gambles. Hell, all draft picks are gambles. Yatil Green was a great kid and a hard worker and a playmaker. Everyone praised Miami when they took him #1 in 1997 saying that Dan would finally have a playmaking wide receiver besides McDuffie. Who knew the poor guy would have eight knee operations?

Yes, Brooks was kicked off the team for smoking pot. Saban and Mueller had the psychiatrist they use to evaluate players have a talk with him. If Saban and Mueller decide to pull the trigger on him, that's good enough for me.

Two words----"Due Diligence"

If the Phins make a play for Brooks they will have a very good idea of what the risk/reward possibilities are. Good job Saban/Mueller!

A few teams are projecting AB as a down lineman in a base 4-3. Some even going so far as to say he has the goods to develop into the next Julius Peppers. I believe he played the middle at UVA, and was constantly(beginning freshman year) described as the next Brian Urlacher by Head coach AL Groh. Personally I think he would be a perfect fit at OLB/DE in Saban's hybrid defense. The only question really, is what do you want to give up for him. How much is too much? Recently, I have read that a second(according to an "expert") would be a steal for a guy that would have gone top five had he stayed in school. If we could somehow grab him for a three, I would be ecstatic.

I say throw a 3 up and see if it sticks. I doubt it will as someone will throw a 2nd, but after a subpar workout combined with the weight/drug issues makes me less excited about this guy. If we get him I will be very excited, but if we lose out on him I will not be very upset. I trust Nick has a pretty good idea how good this guy can be.

Wow, if we really did get him for a 4th that would be insane. I think there is a slight possibility to get em for a 3rd. There is alot of interest growing in him again and the Niners are REALLY interested.

I'd really like to have Brooks, but it may cost us more than a 3rd to get him. Seeing how many teams are showing strong interest, I'm thinking a 1st or 2nd round pick is what it's going to take....

Is he worth a first rounder??....And if not, how many teams ahead of us are going to be willing to use a 2nd rounder to get him? We may not even have a chance to draft him considering all of the interest he's getting....

PHINZ RULE!!!!

Well, if that history told me anything, its that the Texans should probably pass on the supplamental draft ;-)
