Dolphins granted permission to speak with Coyle about DC opening

Cincinnati had a mediocre ranked defense and the pass defense was ranked 20th.
I don't know much about him, but I hope this guy can do the job.

Coyle's done a good job developing players in Cincinnati, including turning guys like Jonathan Joseph and Leon Hall into all-pro players. Chris Crocker was a disaster when he played for Miami but he's been turned into a solid starter/rotational safety in Cincinnati. He also turned the softest safety in the NFL, Reggie Nelson, into a serviceable player and breathed life into the skeleton that was Nate Clements.

interesting that the PB Post is reporting that a "source" claims the phins are moving to a 4-3, I dont know about his background in terms of 3-4/4-3, however Cincy has been more 4-3 than 3-4 so this potential hire jives with the PB Post story.

I preferr the 3-4 we'll see possibly another reason Bowles wasnt kept around, if the team is moving away from the 4-3 no reason to keep a 3-4 guy.

Which matches up better with a New England style offense. Seems like olb in a 4-3 needs to be more atheletic but you can have 4 LBS in coverage with a 3-4. So this means Starks, Langford for DT's Wake and Draft pick at DE. Burnett Dansby and ??? at LB.

Also have Odrick in the mix of DE on DT...

My Madden Line in 4-3 is Langford Odrick Solia Wake if Solia walks replace with STarks. Not bad.

I prefer the 3-4 but it's not easy to find the right personnel to run it and with so many teams having switched to the 3-4 it was even more difficult.

We're going to need linebackers and DEs though. Coples and Kuechly would move to the top of the list.

Not a great year to make the switch, this draft isn't deep at any position and I've heard most GMs only have 22 guys with a first round grade which means a lot of guys will get overdrafted.

the secondary is normally a strength, but they had a very mismatched secondary this season due to a lot of injuries. Bengal fans adore him though

Paul Soliai - DL - Dolphins

"Several sources" tell the Palm Beach Post the Dolphins are expected to switch to a 4-3 defense in 2012, and that as a result free agent NT Paul Soliai will be allowed to walk.

New coach Joe Philbin has yet to even hire a defensive coordinator, but this could be a sign he's not planning to lure an assistant from his former Green Bay. The Packers have run a 3-4 since hiring DC Dom Capers in 2009. Soliai had a disappointing season playing under the franchise tag in 2011, grading out as Pro Football Focus' 38th best defensive tackle.

Very interesting indeed.

Another aspect to getting Coyle is, he might be able to get more from Davis and Smith, as well as help develop Jimmy Wilson & Nolan Caroll to reach their potential.

One thing I have noticed watching Bengals games is that the secondary does have good technique. Looking at some Bengal boards they do understand that they would probably lose Coyle sooner than later.

Let's also point out that he's gotten stellar production with secondaries that outside of recently with Leon Hall and Jonathan Joseph were not all that talented.

I think Coyle will be a 3-4 coach. I think the 4-3 talk is way premature.

seems like he's a capable guy....I have faith that Philbin will put a nice staff together.

Ozzy rules!!

It's Cyle! It's a base 4-3! It means FA's Manny Lawson OLB,DanSkuta LB,Pat Sims DT, and Reggie Nelson FS.

All these guys had good years and would fit nicely into the Dolphins new base 4-3/hybrid/base 3-4 defense. Diverse defenses are the wave of the future. Our opponents won't know from 1 week to the other what to expect.
